You will never hit the advertised speed, that is like a theoretical max if no one else is on, the planets are aligned, and two fingers returns.

The oligopolies on information service are ridiculous.

I don't know what it's like in the US, but over here they tend to have (in the small print) "up to​" before the listed speed.

Yep. If you want a SLA (Service Level Agreement) you generally need to go business class. Regular customers just get to share the scraps.

Now they are in talks with the doodoo heads in DC to change the way they charge for Internet use so that if you are using Netflix constantly, they can charge you more.

There's a Link Removed to get the FCC to restore net neutrality by defining internet service as common carrier. Which would stop the kind of thing you're talking about there, Immigrant. But it hasn't gained much traction so far. Apparently most people are unaware, or apathetic.

Thanks for the link. They need more sigs and I hope they get em. This is one of those things that will affect most people negatively and no one will know until it happens.

BOT I recently downgraded my cable/Internet package (Comcast) to what's called "Limited Basic" and kept the Internet as it was and my bill is about $64 a month, $12 is the TV. Its hard to walk in there and exchange boxes without them pestering you to upgrade instead. The first downgrade was 8 months ago, turning in one box while keeping the DVR because it was my Crack. The CS person signed me up for a package I insisted repeatedly that I didn't want and I didn't discover it for 2 months, and they gave me Showtime as well as the unwanted package for free for 6 months. Just long enough to catch Homeland and Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, etc.

I'm down to maybe 6 watchable channels and am withdrawal stricken. My life sucks.

I have an antenna called a "leaf". It's very small and attaches to the wall behind my tv. It is attached with Velcro. It works great. I get a really good picture on all the broadcast stations at least 30 maybe more. Probably more like 60 but a lot of them are in languages I don't speak. I don't get cable stations but I am ok with that.

I've been in bed with Charter for 11 years at my home, through no other choice as they have a stranglehold over the infrastructure. The essentially own it and won't let any other providers into my area as they agree to "maintain" said infrastructure...securing their monopoly on the area. They suck, their service is spotty and they overcharge while continually sucking big bags of sick filled suck.

I read an article on Gizmodo recently, and labeling them a common carrier would cause all kinds of problems, since there is literally a century worth of requirements with that. A reasonable, up to date standard is a better idea.

The United States has an abysmal record of electing anyone to Congress who actually knows anything about science or technology.

I hate all of you. Living out here in BFE we are paying nearly 70 bucks a month for 3mbp/s internet that is super fussy, especially with these Texas winds.

I'm in canada but i'm with bell, i pay about 60$ a month, 10mbps, 60 gigs bandwith (upload or download..yes...in canada unlimited internet is not very common....only the sketchy smaller companies offer it and its not worth dealing with them because in my experience, they will find every possible way to screw you out of money and also if they judge you download too much anyway they will throttle you..so unlimited my ass)

The thing is my service is not offered anymore (like i only still have it cause i had it before they got rid of it) and if i wanted to change my service id have to get the 15mbps which has 70 gigs bandwidth but would cost me 100$ to install and still cost me the same every month.... i don't need the extra 5mbps and 10 gigs bad enough that i'm willing to pay for a 100$ install for it.
