Who makes a P style "headless" bass?

I just did a quick search on google & here, but didn't find much.

I like my 4 string P-bass, but I can't fit it into the overhead compartment on most airplanes. If I had that body style with no headstock, it would fit.

I found the Steinberger M, but $1700 is more than I want to spend.

Is there anything decent in a lower price range that is currently being produced?

Try again? try what... to make it fit?

Not sure how often you fly, or what airlines, countries, etc. But I fly a lot & as I said, I can't fit it into the overhead compartment on most airplanes.

also, I'm not looking for suggestions like "put you bass in the closet on the plane" or "check it".

Just curious what headless p style basses, if any, are available.

Hohner makes a steinberger stile bass with P J pups the model number is B2B. There is one on ebay now for $459 and free shipping

I have seen a total P-clone w/a Steinie-bridge/tuner setup. Washburn? Samick? Can't recall, but it was straight P-style except for the bridge.

And while not a straight electric or a P-style, this is pretty nice, have played it a few times... so it's in there for good measure...

Status Graphite will make one for you using their Smartbass system, but get in quick as I have heard that they are discontinuing this model.

Thanks for the replies. I should explain better- I want the body style of a p-bass without a headstock. Something similar to (but not "exactly" like) this

I did see those Hohner basses when I google searched, but they just have the P/J p/u configuration, not the P body style.

I found a headless Steinberger with a p style body, but dont want to spend that much $$.

and I'm guessing that Status Graphite would probably set me back a few $$ as well

I'll search again when I have time, but if anyone has a make/model number of a lower priced option, i'd appreciate the 411.

I think Cort had some headless basses with at least PJ pickups. Usually pretty inexpensive, although not so great.

make one! i bought a very very cheap headless off ebay and made the body using the cheapo's neck and bridge, i'm sure if you bought something similar you could buy a P body and mod it or get a luthier to make you one still reasonably priced, then you get it to your specs too!

If you got a 'Hohner The Jack' with the J/J setup and replaced at least the neck pup with a DiMarzio Model J wired in series, you'd get pretty near the P sound with a standard(ish) body.

How often fo you fly?
Could always remove 4 wood screws and remove the neck; wrap both in bubble pack and Bob's your uncle.
Don't think you can achieve your goal with something decent on the cheap

Why not get a replacement neck without a headstock? I've also seen headless conversion kits that you might want to try your hand at.

I don't want to dissamble my bass every time I fly. Often I get on a plane in the US, land in another state (or country) & play a show that night. So I want my bass to to ready to go when I step off the plane

I appreciate the info on status basses, but they are wayyyy more than I want to spend. I just whipped one up on their website to my desired specs and it was 2604.53!

I fly pretty often & unfortunately most airlines that use 767's have reconfigured the overhead space so it's "just" about headstock too short now for my bass. I usually just put my it in the closet, but my last flight from Japan was packed and they were pushing me to check my bass (in a gig bag) as luggage. I protested, they made space. But thats when I started thinking about a p bass with no headstock.

I appreciate the info on conversion kits. I didn't know such an item existed. I'll also do a search for the 'Hohner The Jack'. I also like the frakenbass that "BarkerBass" mentioned. But of course it would be muuuch easier if someone actually makes this type of bass (in my price range).

I'm going to NAMM next week, so I'm trying to gather my info so I can check this stuff out while I'm there. And if there just is nothing "on the cheap" available, then I'll just continue on with my trusty old P... or design my own line of basses if I get some spare time

Yeah, this is the one I'm thinking of. I saw one in a Music go round in the late 90's. I did a search and I can't find one anywhere. Maybe my mind is tricking me.

Indeed, Cort used to do a downsized, headless Precision. I don't think it's been in production for years, but it would be pretty ideal for travel, being so dinky:
