I started on guitar at age 13 and played acoustic and electric for a few years, then I fell in with some HS friends and we formed a band. Both of them were better guitar players so I switched to bass. About 10 years ago I took up mandolin and actually it is my #1 instrument now. But I still bass and guitar.

My first "bass" was a 10 string Chapman Stick in the early 90's. The Stick was a whole lotta fun to play. Then I played an NS/Stick for a number of years, using it as both a guitar and bass.. Eventually playing that giant neck led to tendonitis and I went back to playing guitar and 4 string basses. I don't think my brain works well enough to play a Stick again at this point but I'm tempted to get another.
Mine is an 8 string Stick bass. Ten plus strings seemed intimidating when I was buying mine. Your brain probably works better than you think if you bought one to begin with brotha
I tried around both instruments growing up, started trying both instruments for real around 2 years ago and I get periods where I jump around between them but its pretty much 80/20 between bass and guitar, dont play in any bands but if I were I would be 100% bass. I find it fun to try around with guitar and effects at home and do some Jimi Hendrix wannabe noodling but I always find im not completely in control of the instrument especially with pick and its distracting with my hands and the small strings.. as soon I pick up my bass its like a perfect fitting glove and Im in full control and it also sounds better lol.
I feel that learning bass and theory is helping me more with guitar than other way around due to the approach of adding scales and basslines when playing solo jazz guitar.

Here you go. It says Historic Series on the headstock. When I contacted Grestch, they said it was a prototype that was supposed to be sent to Peerless in Asia but was never shipped. The Historic Series guitars which went into production had a lower bout which measured 12.5 inches across. This one measures 17 inches. It has nice mother of pearl binding around the body and the headstock and a Bigsby.
I play acoustic and sing but primarily play bass, which I haven't been able to master singing while playing. I'm mediocre at either.

i play guitar/keyboards in my current part time group.....I use two Dean Flying Vs and a Jackson Kelley for the whammy bar stuff....i play through a Line6 Spider II with the FBV board.....I probably have a total of 600 bucks invested in the guitars and amp....because guitar isnt my forte, Im not looking to own the best and latest in guitar gear -- i just want gear that sounds decent enough to do the gig
Me back in the 80s. I'm still better on guitar than bass, but that doesn't mean I'm any good.
I'm no whiz on anything but my versatility has put me in the "utility player" category instead of bass. I still do some recording and sit in with friends on bass.
I play keys, guitar and trumpet in my current group.
We also have at home a drumset, flute, tin whistle, harmonica, and ukulele. I can't/don't play those.

I do not understand why people automatically assume someone who plays bass plays the guitar as well. I absolutely despise trying to play guitar. It feels like a cheap toy to me. Paradoxically, I love many great guitar players.
Guitar (electric and acoustic) in highschool, didn't really play anything in college, then was inspired to switch to bass by some of the music I was listening to. More recently I've picked up acoustic guitar again and have been enjoying it! I enjoy switching back and fourth.
Playing bass in bands will always be my #1, but I'd like to do a solo acoustic project at some point.

I know a couple sweet 7/9 voicings and I got a funky right hand. I will play comp guitar all day.

You look like you were good, and in the 80s that's all that really mattered anyhow
.I'm a way better bassist than guitarist but on guitar I stuck to what I was good at (better to be a first rate "me" than a third rate (insert famous guitarist here)). Consequently I fooled a lot of people into thinking I was way better than I actually was.
I don't play electric guitar anymore (still have a couple of SGs and a Strat) but do play a lot on acoustic at home, I have a nylon strung classical, and 6 and 12 string acoustics (nothing special).
My guitar passion is slide delta blues where I hit the occasional open mic night and play my renditions of Sun House and Robert Johnson etc. songs. I think that I am boring everyone senseless but I have noticed a few good (some very good) guitarists studying what I am doing intently.
As regular guitarists are ten a penny I'm going to carry on playing slide, even if I am boring most people senseless!
I started on guitar. Took lessons for a couple of years. Then taught myself piano, bass, drums, and recently fiddle/violin.
I am decent enough to play guitar, bass, or drums with little to no preparation...but not piano or violin. I definitely have to prepare for those.
If I had my way, I would gig mostly on bass, but unfortunately, these days it is mostly drum or guitar opportunities for me lately. I also teach guitar and bass (part time), but that isn't the same as gigging.
And delta7fred....I can play a lot of different guitar styles. Acoustic finger style, flamenco, electric guitar blues,rock, and funk, etc. But I can't play slide. Would love to though. Do you have any tips?
