Every bass player should learn some guitar and keyboards … and while you are at it … learn a little theory and learn a little music reading.

A good place to start is get an acoustic guitar

I have played guitar longer than I have played bass. I got really good on guitar, got signed to an independent label in 1990 and put out a 45 and a couple of CDs (big deal in those days). I started playing bass because there was never a bass player available. I fell in love. It took me a long time to develop feel and not just play it like a guitar player playing bass. Now, I'm probably better on bass than guitar, just because I play it more. I also play piano. You can listen to me play all of these with my drummer on my album on bandcamp. Strong Enough, by Chris Caruso I have it set for free download (maybe pay $0?) free listening.

I started on guitar but I feel like the guitar fights me. I don’t feel like the bass does. I’m a good cowboy chord guitar player, but not much on lead work. Could be better if I practiced at it. But, there are lots of guitar players and not many bass players. I’m happy to play the bass.

if you're like me.. the bass just is more intuitive. more fun to play when i'm relaxed and expressing stuff

I started on bass during the 90's but I bought a couple of guitars just for fun. They stayed untouched inside their bags until 2014 when I became Coice's guitarrist only because the band was formed with another bass player and I decided to finally play guitar.

To be honest, 3 albuns with Coice later, I still see the guitar only as tool to play my own songs with that particular band. That's my one and only goal as a guitarrist.

yea, but he made some of the most playable, perfect, incredible sounding instruments back in the 80s and 90s. I played one of his fretless basses (The all black ones with EMGs in PJ) back in the 80s for a while - incredible instrument.

I started on bass then a few years later taught myself guitar. I'm good -- at least that's what I'm told. My axes:

Started on guitar at 14 and went to bass as my primary instrument at 16. I've never stopped playing both, but only feel truly competent on bass. On the other hand, I have a more idiosyncratic, though more limited sound on guitar.

I own more guitars (4 acoustic and 3 electric) than basses (1 acoustic and 5 electric), but it's a close race.

I started playing guitar before bass (back in the 70s). My story is pretty common: in a band with another guitarist who was better than me and no bass players available. So one night the drummer's father let me play his bass. He wrote out a walking bass line for me. I still have the sheet music!

Playing guitar first helped with bass as far as knowing where the notes are on the fingerboard. Playing more than one instrument is good since when you get in a rut you can switch to the other instrument. I play keyboards too. But bass is my primary instrument.

Any gigs I've done were always on bass. I didn't touch the guitar for a long time but the last couple of years I've been getting back into it. I find it really challenging, I'm not used to the chord formations and the smaller string spacing after years of playing bass. I've bought a few guitars and am selling off some basses. Here's a family shot of the guitars. Three Taylors, a Carvin, and a Suhr.
