Who Was Your First...

The first album I ever bought, Stay Hungry by Twisted Sister. I still like it after all these years. Mark Mendoza rocks!

I always wanted a "Who died & made YOU A.J. Perro?" T-shirt!

The guy's nickname was Poley...first saw him at Ray's Lounge, S. Fulton, KY back in the mid 70's. Played for a local cover band called Wolfman and the Pack. Had a blonde Fender Tele bass with the bridge and pick-up covers (always wondered whaz' under those thangs I wonder?). His rig was an original Kustom green metal flake tuck-n-rolled thunder maker...I can still hear him covering one of my all time favorite bass lines from the tune All Right Now by Free. If I remember correctly I was sporting a mullet with a body perm in part that hung over my extended nylon disco shirt collar.

<Covering Head>Gene Simmons</Covering Head> and Mel Schacher. All my friends and I were KISS and Grand Funk freaks back in the '70s. We wanted to start a band and the only instrument I ever considered was the bass.
Don't bury your head man! OWN THAT S#!T!!! We were all young once. Though it's easy to chuckle at the monster suits and thigh-high platform boots. KISS busted their asses & took a lotta risks to earn their place in Rock & Roll history. KISS's music didn't require a Jaco. They required a "God of Thunder"! Besides... if you weren't who you were back then... you wouldn't be who you are now!

HOW COOL!!! You're the first to cite a local guy as your "first brush with bass"!

Starting with the backstory; I was recruited into my best friend's band because they couldn't find a bass player. It was one of those 'here, borrow my bass for a few days and learn these songs' things. So I didn't have a bass conversion per se. But after learning a few simple songs I eventually really started paying attention to the bass lines of every song I heard. Sting was the one I first started trying to emulate but I quickly added McCartney and dug back into the Beatles stuff. I've always credited Dave Hope as well for the more rock type sound. But then Nick Lowe was enough to make me buy a Hamer 8 string. Only time I ever got cheered was when I put that on and came back on stage. I also absolutely love the bass line to Josie and think Chuck Rainey is a monster. Playing like him would be one of my three wishes.

To this day I'm astounded by Casadys bass lines. I mean how does he come up with them?

Saw Hot Tuna acoustic several years back. Still uses his signature Tone

I didn't really become aware of Cassady's work until going on a Jefferson Airplane binge about a year ago. Groundbreaking stuff! Crown of Creation bass lines SO good!

The first I really noted the awesome bass lines and made me want to play bass ? Duck Dunn.

The Blues Brothers album.

Before that I had played guitar for a few years. Still young. I really liked Chris Squire, Greg Lake, and others, but Duck was the one.
