A lot of famous musicians and bands have traveled an unpredictable path to success. A few examples:
1. Phil Lesh, Grateful Dead bassist, was a classically trained trumpet player. He had never considered playing bass, and had to be talked into it by Jerry Garcia, who was forming Warlock, the band that would become The Grateful Dead.
2. John Oates of blue-eyed soul band Hall & Oates played mainly roots and bluegrass music before joining teaming up with Daryl Hall.
3. Jethro Tull started out as a blues band, with Ian Anderson on harmonica.
