I'm really honestly surprised at the number of people who are fretting without their pinkie in the mix. I never even considered this. Please accept my apologies, as the title while purposefully ambiguous, has been taken more so, as I originally didn't specify to which hand I was referring.

I just naturally play using whichever finger's closest to whichever string I wanna pluck. Don't use the pinky though.
