I am asked regularly if I give lessons. My answer is that I have too much to learn myself. I hope I don't sound like a smart a** when I say that. I'd like to find an upright teacher and get together with someone other than a bass player to work on improv; a guitarist or a keyboard player. I'll have to do something about that soon.

Great guy and terrific teacher who understands and appreciates playing for the song ala Jamerson rather than being an ubertechnician.

I'm glad to see someone mentioning Glenn L in here. I'm in the bay area and was hoping i'd see some posts in this thread from bay area players. I'd wanted to take lessons from a solid world class teacher and when I searched around a few years ago he was one of the few I found. I inquired with him about taking lessons but unforunately my school schedule and finances really didn't permit it. I remember reading the articles he wrote on his website and thinking "man, this guy would be great to learn from".

Anyway, i've been throwing around the idea of starting up some serious lessons again and it's good to see him still teaching; I might go ahead and contact him shortly..

Very cool man. I went to NYC to take a lesson with Matt. It really opened up a lot of things for me. You'll have a great time. He's a great person as well, a lot of fun. I tried to get lessons in Boston outside of the school but he's booked up solid.

You must be doing pretty well if you have Matt for your third semester. Great job man!

The dude is totally crazy, in a really good way. Think Benjamin Sisko only waaay laid-back.

I'm lucky enough to have the legendary Link Removed (He's a bass god - apparently the 5th best bassist in England...) - I'm trying to milk him for all the playing techniques I can before I finish uni next year

At the risk of sounding horribly cliche. My teacher is everyone around me and everything I listen to. Even though my actually instructor is a guitar player that graduated from Berklee. And my past instructor dropped out (gotta love that rockstar cred!) But I really enjoy picking everyones brains with whom I play with. Because of this is really don't plateau much. And I can constantly see myself getting better, and understand music more and more.


It took a while for me to think like this. And now my lessons are more like a conversation than a student teacher situation. Just how I communicate on a normal basis with other musicians.

I totally hear that, man. I learn tons just from playing with my band. The keyboardist and guitarists are monster players, and just accenting what they're doing is teaching me a lot about my instrument.

I lucked out and have had Kristin Korb and Norm Stockton for teachers. Both were really into teaching music rather than just bass riffs - both are great teachers. I still have a LONG way to go, but I'm working on it! Another great teacher is Todd Johnson - he did a master class that I attended. If he were not so far away I would love to take more lessons from him. Yeah, he does the solo bass thing but he really has his playing together and is a really good communicator.
