Who's Your Favorite Custom Builder???

Mike Pedulla might not consider custom but he make some of the finest basses I have ever held.

Steve Wishnevsky for sure does it his way. And for a bang for the buck you can get woods and a simple playable good sounding instrument that you be sandpapering and polishing for weeks.

I have one of Carl Thompson's earlier basses and he is another artist. Perhaps more than any other builder he is responsible for a bassist not having to have a left arm twice the size of the right arm. The first time I picked my CT up and played it was when my Thunderbird headed for a rest in the closet. That might have been mid eighties. The neck could be used for a bassball bat and nothing is better for a bar fight.

I would definitely put Mike in the custom category. Even though he has set body woods and models. He will still do a lot of customization for you as far as some of the colors, woods/options go. And he will talk to you personally to make sure you get exactly what you want. Super nice guy...

My favorites...
Brubaker
Yancey
Fodera
Elrick
R Bass
Mike Tobias
Clement
Marleaux
F Bass

These have all offered excellent playability and sound, excellent design and construction and in some cases value too. Not coincidentally, they're also works I either own, in multiples in most cases, or have owned and let go reluctantly.

I haven't seen anyone mention David Segal of New York Bass Works. I have played several of his basses and they are great. I also have one on order.

Carl Pedigo....Lakland's first employee.....now part time Lakland and part time custom builder and master luthier (repair etc)

He has build many custom units lately including one for me recently and one on the way....

Will post pics tomorrow....his work is impeccable

I'd like to give a nod to a young builder that is building some really nice stuff and can and will do completely custom builds. Brady Muckelroy. Brady Muckelroy Custom Basses & More Really nice guy too. I've been in his shop and seen his work from finished basses to 5 piece necks in the beginning stage of laminating the wood together. Can't wait until I can afford to spec out exactly what I want from him and see him build it from raw wood!

There are a lot of good builders listed here. I'm glad that I live at a time where we have all this available to us. The biggest player here is Fender and I can say that I own two pieces from their main production line (not the Custom Shop) that continue to blow me away: A walnut American Deluxe Zone Bass and a 4-string Victor Bailey. Both go head to head with all the custom built pieces I have.
That said there are three builders I need to mention. Their work continues to push the limits of other builders, including most of those mentioned here. Each has gone off in another direction testing the limits of perfection, both tonally and ascetically.
