Why all the Tal smack talk?

I just saw Tal and Vinnie together about an hour ago on the opening night of the Herbie Hancock summer tour at the Rochester International Jazz Fest. Say what you may, but her playing is growing by the day IMO. I heard harmony in her lines I didn't hear, at least in the Ronnie Scott's DVD. She sang harmony on a few tunes with the female lead vocalist, and also with Greg Phillinganes. She even sang the lead behind a very melodic bass line on Bob Dylan's A Change is Gonna Come. I might add, she did a great job. She and Vinnie Colaiuta compliment each other quite well.
On a side note I was disappointed at first to hear that they weren't out with Jeff Beck since I am seeing that show here Fri night, but once I heard who was replacing them, and seeing them with Herbie tonight, win, win!! And if that isn't enough, once the Jeff Beck show is over Fri night, I literally have to walk out the door of the theater, and Duck Dunn is playing outside with Steve Cropper and Booker T.

I ,for one, will be very pissed if her ability doesn't grow. If it doesn't then we've all been dupped. I just worry about her little hands. Will she screw them up. So much playing in so little time. Those years in the trenches pay off with good technique that is learned from experience.

Nobody gets to play with Vinnie and Chick because of these things. Between the two of them and Jeff Beck, those cats have played with the "who's who" of music deity. You just don't get there without the musical goods. Ever seen these guys in person? Chick especially has never been one to rely on image...



I just wanted to start a thread praising her for her groove, harmonic complexity, and the outpouring of joy I hear in her playing... as I said in another thread, I'd be happy to sub a gig to her any day of the week. Not true of many of the chopsier fellas out there these days. There's certainly guys with more chops, but typically there's that nasty ego that goes along with it. Tal seems humble enough not to vibe cats off the stage. This quality alone gets you farther in the industry than nearly anything else. Who wants to be on the bus with a prick?

I agree. If anything, given her age, I would be very curious to hear how her musical voice changes with years of experience playing with these heavyweights of music.

Not going to read the whole thread or a previous thread. The thing is, Beck, Hancock et al CHOSE Tal. Right?

Are you accusing those musicians of choosing Tal because she's a young woman, or because she has such passion and enthusiasm and skill, it practically blew them away?

You're on to something there. Why does Carol Kaye draw so much smack-down around here? At the same time, I can name a whole bunch of male players who couldn't hold a candle to Carol (or Tal) that have legions of devoted followers screaming "Bass God."

Some people can't deal with a woman flaunting her 34" fingerboard in public.

Every player is either loved or loathed in one form or another. In Tal's case from what I can see and hear she is talented and a decent player obviously. She is pretty good at emulating Jaco and she is quite the novelty piece for the acts she's been hired for. Her small stature does impact her abilty on the bass, whether some of you want to believe or not. Kind of like hanging a 35 inch scale 6 string bass on Angus Young. You can tell she has just enough hand stength to make the bass work. For as good as she is and as much as she looks like she enjoying the hell out of her job I don't feel that fire you feel with most other players in the fusion genre, male or female. As a bassist you need to be able to drive a band. I've got alot of respect for anyone whose made it as far as she has but let's be honest a cute girl that plays bass, what a great marketing ploy. Kind of like Johnny Lang. Congradulations to her on her sucesses and I hope in time her abilities reach the hieght of the pedestal everyone has put her on. Just my opinion.
