Why are bass players such techies?

Actually, with the exception of our chick singer I am the least technically savvy member of my band.

I definitely know how I want things to sound but outside of dialing-in my own gear (which is minimal), I really have very little clue how those sounds are achieved outside of a basic understanding of things like EQ and compression. I'm pretty clueless about electronics and even less about computers. To me the gear is just tools to help me do my job and I don't get real wrapped up in how it all works.

Somebody's got to do it.

If not for us and our technical expertise to guide them, guitar players would try to plug their dick into a light socket.

I'm seriously laughing out loud. My buddy, great guy, is a total moron about gear. Impedance? What is that. I just plug my amp to the speaker cab. Oh, so that's why my amp kept dieing?

Granted I'm no expert and still learning but I have the sense to ask questions about stuff I don't understand. He just plugs it in and goes.
