Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

Hey rubadub, no one in the States is laughing at Chinese guitars, or any other Chinese products that have infested our marketplace. It's a serious problem, whether those products are of decent quality or are pure junk (and let's face it, much of it is total trash).

We're also well aquainted with anti-American sentiments. So enjoy your little mean spirited barbs while you still can. But know this...if we go down, you go down with us. Talk about wearing "blinders". Myopic much?

+1. If our economy tanks then you're all in trouble. You can celebrate the decline of the dollar if you like but it's all down hill from here. Like it or not, cheap Chines crap is a global problem - even for the Chinese.

I've seen my share of beat to heck Foundations, Fury's and Dyna's. Rusty hardware, necks that look like ski jumps, dings all over. Not all the old Peavey's look pristine anymore or are even really playable without a lot of work.

True that.

And over time, the micro-tilt feature has turned out to be more of a bane than the boon it was intended to be.

The Japanese crept up on you guys and now it looks like the Chinese are about to do the same. Fender know this yet Gibson are still living on their past. The rest of the world doesn't have the USA equals superior blinkers on anymore.
Quality speaks for itself to those who are prepared to judge without prejudice. Enjoy Laughing at Chinese guitars while you can but I bet you won't be in 20 years time.

"You guys" - LOL!!! Hey, how's manufacturing guitars in the UK doing??!!

The Japanese have been making quality gear for 30 years. Still the US manufactured guitars are the most desired, and the US gear dominates as far as price on the used market. The Chinese stuff today, though ok for the price, will never see decent value on the used market. And if you think the Chinese stuff can put the US manufacturing out of business - well.... it's not happening now, and it didn't happen with Japan. Keep on dreaming, though. :)

And the world #1 automotive producer is who? Toyota.
Are there any television or stereo products made in the USA anymore?
Now I am watching my employer, a top medical imaging manufacturer, slowly move production to China and India.

Too many people have their head in the sand and don't realize that this is happening. Wake up and smell the coffee. The world is slowly becoming an even playing field and that's coming at a big loss to the USA. If you don't believe it, or refuse to, look at publications like the Harvard Business Review.

I do see what you're saying there. However...

Just wanted to add that many Japanese car brands are actually manufactured in the United States for sale in the United States these days.

Also, as a programmer/software engineer, I remember some years back when outsourcing all coding was the rage. In the midst of the craze, many companies found out that outsourcing code often provided problems due to the same reasons why some people don't want to buy imported budget basses - quality could be very shoddy. Also there were language barriers in many situations, and things didn't get done on time because of that, or requirements weren't clear, or any other number of problems. Now outsourcing code isn't so huge anymore, and the job market is pretty good for programmers.

Anyway, with that tangent said, please don't turn this into another political discussion.

Some people ARE laughing at Chinese guitars and they are the ones that I'm having a go at. It's nothing to do with anti American. I spend most of my time listening to American music.
Those of you who are not laughing are the ones who are awake enough to see that you have a problem. Fender are trying to address the problem. They have really got their act together and the quality has improved. So, therefore, has the value for money of their guitars. Unlike Gibson who treat their staff like dirt and use illegal wood and put their prices up without putting the quality up. They are living on their past.
Our economy got hit years ago. Look at our motorbike industry as a good example. The Japanese crept up on us too.
Smart companies embrace the Chinese and use their industrial developement to make products to their spec that can compete with the lower quality Chinese instruments price wise but offer a better level of quality. I'm thinking of Entwistle and Wilkinson.
All I'm saying is that attitudes like Gibsons will not help your situation. The quality differential between USA built and Chinese built is getting narrower all the time.
You lost your camera industry to the Japanese years ago.
Obviously it hurts hence the vitriolic reply to my post. Fair enough but the people with their head in the sand are not helping your cause.

Denying that Chinese guitars can equal American guitars is part of the problem not the solution.
As for you go down we go down.. ?. This country is already screwed by corporate greed. We have to buy what we can afford. If that product is of good quality we are not in a position to choose where it was made. Get your prices to match the Chinese and we will happily buy American so long as the quality is up to scratch.

Pssst.... lighten up

Oh yeah and you can laugh at the English guitar industry but there are plenty of talented luthiers here. There will always be a small market for bespoke items.
But then we learned that It's not always about how big you are. What was that old saying about the bigger you are... ?
And I never said that I wanted the USA economy to collapse. If you have to throw insults because you don't like having a painful reality pointed out then you are not one of the Americans that I respect. Glad your not typical of your countrymen.

I still don't see anyone laughing about it.

If you think Gibson is unethical in their business practices due to using illegal wood, or misteating their employees, and therefore undeserving of your business, then you should be absolutely abhorred by the thought of buying any product made by slave labor, in a factory that routinely violates every environmental safeguard on the planet, violates trade agreements at will, and constantly engages in industrial espionage to steal secrets and technology from the rest of the world. China. To spurn one (Gibson), then contribute to the other (China) comes off as hypocritical.

Denying that Chinese guitars can equal American guitars is part of the problem not the solution.

Maybe they will one day, but from what I've seen so far, they're not there yet. The 'solution' is to not buy Chinese goods. If it's not possible to buy domestically, then at least buy goods made in a country that is an ally, like Korea. China is anything but.

As for you go down we go down.. ?. This country is already screwed by corporate greed.

It can always get much, much worse. History has taught us that.
