Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

I've not been following this entire thread since I don't have a horse in this race, but when I do and see your posts I keep asking: have you ever played a Peavey bass in your life? Even once?

If not, then you're simply giving us an opinion on a matter you are not qualified to give :rollno:

If you have, then please tell us in concrete and objective terms why you look down your nose at them.

In a (largely) capitalistic economy, price and quality do not always correlate, the stock market (any of them) are great examples. Much of what drives prices and perceived value are emotion and prejudice. That is not objective reasoning.

Yes, i played a Fundation and tryed a Palaedium and a T40

then you can clearly see the quality of the build: pretty damned high.

Whether or not you like the sound or the feel is another matter entirely and that is indeed purely subjective.

To bash, or damn with faint praise, a brand of instrument that is made to high standards but doesn't suit your taste or somehow not perceived as "cool" as whatever brand YOU like is very immature and shows a lack of experience in the matter :eyebrow:

Surely that SX fans would give his SX for a Fender without thinking...

Many SX owners also own Fenders and other brands as well. That's exactly my point. Most of the people on this forum have owned and played many other brands.

When I draw a conclusion about a product, it is usually because I have taken the time to look at other options as well. That's what most people do.

I dont said they dont own a Fender or other basses, i just said they surely would give his SX for a Fender.
And remember, theres more Fender fans than SX fans, so you cant make a conclusion like "SX sounds like Fender" just because the preference of the minority...

I think there is a stigma attached to peavey basses simply because the company is so strongly identified as a maker of amps. I remember when they instrument line first came out. My impression was that they were kind of clumsily built- heavy, blocky- not very good looking. And peavy amps were what you used until you could afford an SVT. Ah the good old days!

These threads just kill me. If you love Peavey, great. But, to imply that the only reason people are willing to pay more for a Fender or a Ric is the name on the headstock is simply ludicrous. Fender P basses and Jazz basses are popular, and have been, because they sound and play really good. There are basses that sound and play better and those that sound and play worse. What's the big controversy?

I inferred from the OP's question that he didn't understand why Peavey basses don't bring more $$ on the 2nd hand market. Which would imply some appreciation for them and an expectation that they would have more monetary value. A perfectly reasonable question.

I wasn't implying that the op's question was unreasonable, just some of the responses that followed.

Yeah, I recently bought a MIA Fury 4 string, after seeing them so hyped, for so long... IMO, fit, finish, hardware, and electronics are on par with most Squier or SX basses I've owned or played - definitely not better than most MIM Fenders, and not even close to most MIA Fenders... I will say that it has a nice neck, and excellent fretwork, and the neck alone is worth more than I paid... I really prefer to buy American whenever I can, and would say that this bass is well worth the typical asking price of $200, but I wouldn't pay $300 for it... In fact, I paid around $400 for the '06 MIM Deluxe P Bass Special I have, and it's a much better built instrument in every way...

i agree...

OP Here: More evidence of the value. Someone in this thread made me look for one, a USA made Predator. Sounds as good as and plays as good as any Strat I have ever played. MIM, MIJ, or USA..........How much you say? $100! Got it today for my daughter.

I think that might have been me. The Predator is a great guitar for the money IMHO. I hope your daughter has fun with it!

I don't see the big attraction to the Fury's, either. That said, the short-lived original Fury (slant SF) was a good bass, miles ahead of the later ones, in terms of build and hardware. Not in the same league, really.

Same goes for the later, downgraded Foundation. Once Peavey went to the cheaper hardware, then worse still, quit the Super Ferrite pickups altogether, the Foundation ceased to be a very good bass IMO. In its original stock form the Foundation is a complete bass, needs no upgrading or modifying.

When I think of "old" Peavey basses, I see these and the T-series. Innovative original designs (yes I know everything is a Fender derivative), each with their own character and built for tough duty. They're classics in my view, along with examples from the other USA makers of the era.

I heard you and appreciated your answer. All this childishness is just gobbling up hard drive space on our beloved talkbass server!

Why don't we all shake hands and close this thread to preserve our hard drive space ?

This dead horse has seen enough already. Please. Everything that can be said has been said 100 times and the trolls are just throwing gas on the fire. Give it up already.

That's why there is both chocolate and vanilla ice cream ; some people like one or the other and some people like both.
