Why are so many musicians flaky?

I dont think it has anything to do with creativity or artisry or right brainedness. Flakey people are just unmotivated.

I know this because I used to be way more motivated when I was young. I was willing to chase my dreams with enthusiasm. Now I'm a cynical old fart. My dreams died long ago and I no longer tolerate bullcrap from flakey musicians. And yes Im aware of the irony there.

IMO it's easy to try and make stereo types and they usually exist because someone will just agree to the point of ad nuaseum, 'oh yeah you're right, musicians ARE flaky'. When it has more to do with ignoring the opposite side of the spectrum which is many people of all types are flaky. But that's hard to categorize.
It's like saying women are bad drivers, or asians are: More likely it's just biased BS that people latch onto.

Probably musicians think musicians are flaky because they deal with a lot of musicians. Do the same people deal with a lot of athletes? If they did they'd probably be considered just as flaky.
On the other end of the scale do you think PROFESSIONAL musicians are flaky? I doubt someone in an orchestra would be professional if they were flaky.

Most likely people in garage bands are just more relaxed and are flaky in all parts of life.

i would think most ' trained ' musicians aren't any flakier than any others ...

but maybe someone who went straight from Guitar Hero and joined a band = yeh


i would think starting on piano at age 6 has lead to a pretty strong rehearsal discipline ..!! and folks think i'm nuts, as i near 60 yrs old and still practice piano/bass/gtr almost every day .. !

Hmm, I think some disciplines (job fields) are just not predisposed to flaky people, and if any come around they are fired quickly.
Accountants for instance, or anything to do with Finance really.

I believe this is closest to the truth. In addition to being a musician, I have family and friends that are artists of one type or another and hung around in their circles throughout my life. While I have seen that people who are predominately "artistic/creative" personality types are generally different in the way they perceive and interact with the society around them, the ones who are successful have the same traits as those who are successful in any other endeavor. They are focused, disciplined and have a very strong work ethic in regard to their profession.
The type of persons that give rise to the "flakey/dreamer/lazy" stereotype usually lack one or all of those traits.

I was going to write a witty, well informed retort involving dandruff shampoo and how bassists are head and shoulders above other musicians. Then I flaked.

I'll bet that very technically-oriented bands are much more disciplined - the King Crimsons, Dream Theaters and djent bands of the world...

Ha. I have to agree with the Tattoo Artist being flaky. I watched a kid being chewed out by his boss because he did a tattoo on his best bud - who happened to be about 14. Which in Florida is way illegal. During the fuss the boss was informed that the employee was 15. Which is Florida is way illegal. The kid kept saying "but he was OK with it so it's OK." Manager 'blah blah blah ad infinitum' Kid "but it's OK if it's OK with him and OK with me. What's the problem" "It's illegal is the problem" "Well why does that matter. I'm just doing tattoos . . ." Went on for 15 minutes and the kid was totally flaky - totally a moron. OK, that's my rant. Back to the original post.
