Why are so many musicians flaky?

I was developing software & my boss once told me I was the least disciplined geek he'd worked with, but he liked my style, LOL!
My band mates flake out of practice occasionally, I'm going to assume it has something to do with priorities. You can miss a practice sesh without being fired (usually) but if you don't show up to your day job or school it can be a worse punishment.
I think it may just be selective perception. People are just flaky in general... they flake on party invites, movie outings, rounds of golf, whatever. You might just notice it more because music is important to you so the flakes (disappointments) really stand out? Just my take.
Coincidentally, he took me out drinking with him that night. We had been out drinking, but this time we went "drinking". He even had a new dent in his SUV in the morning.
You know that a janitor is also referred to as a maintenance engineer in some areas of work. Wonder how the janitor feels about his chosen discipline.
I tattooed my way through grad school. I just wanted to let you know that, although I retired after spinal surgery, you are 100% on the money. I am flakey AF.
Some musicians mistake being 'artistic' with being inconsiderate, petulant, and flaky. It's not an excuse.
Of course, some 'artists' don't really need other musicians. They just need someone to grind an organ while they dance around with a tin cup. At least that way nobody is surprised when the 'artist' throws a tantrum, and flings poo around.

I'm still shocked you haven't heard "discipline" used in that manner in 22 years. Are you a sales engineer?
I think it has more to do with being introverted than it does with ego. I still show up for practice and gigs. The deal is, when everyone wants to hang out afterward, I ninja myself out of there.
That is quite accurate. I think the flakiness comes from folks that want the immediate gratification w/o the discipline or hard work to get there.
That's a very good policy actually.
It would only be flaky if you ditched them someplace & you were their ride home.
In that case, I would like to change my vote... Unless changing it makes me flakey.
As someone whose father-in-law was a janitor, I can say with the utmost certainty that waking up at 2 in the morning every day to clean other other peoples' #$%@ takes A LOT of discipline.
