why are some fenders made like this

I wonder if those who don't like relic'd instruments have ever worn a pair of jeans.

You know there are jeans still sold without holes or fake crease line...

I like my basses just like my jeans. I dig the mint look but I develop attachment as wear signs grow on them. I think it's more genuine, shows personality to a certain extent.

I have cellist friend who chipped a nasty piece on the side of his cello belly. It doesn't improve the visual quality of the cello but its a great reminder of the time when he was playing 10-12h a day. It's a real battle scar. Not some stick on tattoo wannabee-badness.

I have a 75 P that is very worn. Looks great sounds great...pretty heavy though. I also have a Rebel Relic 62 J...it kills. I love my P but honestly the Relic'd J out performs it, out plays it and even though I haven't played too many actual 60's J basses, the few that I've played don't sounds or feel nearly as good. Of course I'd love an actual Pre CBS J but my poser one is the best bass I've ever played hands down. I've gotten nothing but complements from bassists on my tone and how it plays even those who own "the real deal"

Ironically enough most of the people who are commenting on folks being a poser for not buying the real thing and how it looks cheesy, are the only ones commenting on how the bass looks not how it plays or feels...I guess I would have always thought that "posers" were the guys more concerned with looks than utility...strange dynamic going on here....

I'm saying that for anyone that is calling an owner of a reliced or Road Worn Fender bass a "poser" that the reality is, that their are plenty of much more advanced, dedicated, hard working & talented bass players that exist out there.
So even if we had a way to measure the absolute most bad @$$ bass player within this thread or forum for that matter that is insulting/calling these guys "posers" their is w/o question a much better bass player than them that has still managed to get there while owning/playing a reliced or Road Worn bass.

Which is kinda nothing more than s long way of saying.
Until you are the best of the absolute best, save the judgements for people better suited to be doing so.

What about that is bad? How does that make me anything like anyone insulting someone for the basses look they choose to play?
It's reality, there is always someone that is better than you, I & the next guy (unless the next guy or you are John Enthwhistle or Geddy Lee or James Jamerson or the like)

I agree there is always a faster gunfighter in the next town, but that can apply to all of us. When you single out those who call relic owners posers with that statement, it can be taken as an insult as well.

Let's all just state which side of the issue we're own and why. Leave it at that. I enjoy reading everyone's opinion whether I agree with it or not. I might just learn something.

No need, it's just a couple people conversing about a opinionated topic, we don't all have to agree and I think everyone lately has been pretty respectful and mindful of others views.

However I'll offer the same in return, my apologies as well because my intention has never been to insult anyone.

I look at it this way...

Musicians are performers. When you are up on stage you want to give the audience the whole package – you want the experience to match expectations and you want to look the part. Any Motorhead fans remember Brian Robinson? Arguably the best of their long line up of guitarists and responsible for the sound of their best album (Another Perfect Day) , however he insisted on wearing baggy satin trousers and a short haircut on stage. He sounded brilliant but just looked wrong.

If you thought your Bootsy Collins replica star bass with flashing lights played and sounded better than any other bass you’ve ever played in your life, you still wouldn’t pull it out at a Grand Ole Opry night. You need to look the part, the audience expects it.

Eddie Van Halen did all kind sof stuff to perfectly good guitars to get the right look. And can you tell me Tommy Shannon honestly treats his basses so badly that they end up looking like this naturally?

(OK I know its a '62 and it was played at Woodstock, but I still can't believe that you lose that much paint off an instrument you earn your livelihood with - especially at the top edge of the pickguard from the 17th fret down, you don't contact that area playing/picking it up/dropping it. I'm thinking a canny manager gave him some "advice").

So long as no one secretly thinks it will make them sound better because it’s been hit with a chain and sanded, I don’t see a problem with it.

I don't care who plays what. If they like it sure go for it , if it sounds good Kool get it but I can't see myself playing one because it , in my hands just wouldn't feel right I would feel like a punk (and not the good kind hehe) like if someone came and asked me what year it wad ''oh its new I just thought I would look cool if it looked beat to hell" to me I would just feel fake wearing one because it would be fake mojo (I myself like mint basses) I would prefer to buy an old beat up bass because at least somebody put it to use to give it that wear instead of it being artificial but I myself would rather have a mint old bass or a new bass . If you like them go for it I don't care what you do , would i own one no, would i care if you owned one no .
