To be honest that reply from Ampeg was with the 7 Pro melt down problems not the PF500 problems. But because of the way they have handled the 500 and 7 Pro problems I will never buy a Ampeg product.
All amps can have problems, it is how the manufacturer handles the problems.
I think that part of the price drop might relate to an iron or steel body as opposed to the aluminum ones that the gk's have. Economies of scale and manufacturing location could help, but the pf amps are heavier than their other counterparts, I think the use of steel for a case/cabinet might be part of why -it weighs more, but to my knowledge it's cheaper, correct me if I'm wrong.This.

I wonder how much they'd cost if they were Assembled in the USA. A Portaflex Heritage 350/500/800 if you will.
However, GK's micros are Assembled in the USA from foreign and domestic components and don't cost that much more.
My Fender Rumble says "Made in Indonesia". Oops.
So in your personal opinion an Aguilar TH500 is worth every penny more than a Markbass Little Mark III?If you pay less than a dollar a watt (new) for a micro head (Ampeg, GK, Kustom, Fender Rumble or others) you're buying a toaster. An appliance. A disposable piece of kit, in effect. Markbass has always seemed like an overpriced toaster to me, but lots of people like them, except for those who have had to get repairs. Main circuit boards are pricey.
The GK micros were bashed when they came out because of the teething problems. Then there were the noisy MB-200s. So were the PFs. ISTR the PF revs with issues were a couple of years ago now, but people still like to hate their manufacturer of choice.
Pay more than a dollar a watt (Genz Benz, Aguilar, Warwick, etc.) and you are in another realm of design, support, and engineering.
Been playing 3-4 nights a week with a PF-350 through my 4 ohm Eden cab for the last 16 months, and have yet to have a single hiccup. However, do continue about these supposed "reliability issues".
Since this is an area that I have a whole lot of real world design experience with, let me share a few thoughts regarding SMPS and class D that might help shed spome of the myths surrounding many of the simplistic assumptions of the technology...
1. SMPS and Class D topologies can provide exactly the same (and even better) performance than line frequency power supplies and traditional class AB/G/H power amps. The primary differences are in how well each type of amplifier is designed, and to what level the attention to detail is engaged. I have just about equal experience with both, and have conducted extensive blind AB listening tests to amps designed to the same goals.
2. SMPS/Class D is not a simple plug and play, DIY endevor. Even though it would SEEM like it is from some of the marketing literature and DIY forums, there is a great difference between something "working sorta ok" and something that really works to the potential of the technology, this includes things like clipping control, safety shutdown systems, damage control, power supply management, cooling, etc. Then, there are those pesky safety and EMI emissions issues that are critical to a properly functioning product in the real world. In short, getting one unit to "work" is vastly different than getting tens of thousands of units to work correctly and reliably, and pass safety/EMI testing.
3. Then there is the "not insignificant" challenge of the rest of the bass amp, including voicing, noise management, grounding and, since the preamp will be operating inside a chassis with a high powered class D and SMPS, EMI management of low level circuitry and grounding paths. Ground is not equiptential at RF frequencies. In fact, ground is never ground except ah one single point that must be carefully defined within the design. Everything degrades from there. Every wire, lead and trace acts as an antenna, there are inductive and capacitive issues at RF that are often insignificant at lower frequencies, etc.
4. IcePower provides a starting point for experienced designers. A look at the marketplace shows some very good executions as well as some really poor executions with IcePower modules. All of the critical information regarding these modules is contained "between the lines". There are different module types and classes that contain specific technlogies that are solution specific to particular applications and needs. There are some specific applications that are not documented or specified in the data sheets, they are intended for experienced design engineers who understand what is going on "under the hood" in order to use properly (the basis for a patent that was awarded to us regarding a significant extension to generally accepted practice).
5. This is an evolving technology. I have seen many Class D providers come and go, many grandiose promises quickly turn into vaporware. The key to being successful with this technology is to understand it, not believe everything that is said within the marketing groups, and to test, evakluate, and test some more. The surface has barely been scratched, I look forward to some significant improvements in the near future with regard to performance and cost enhancements.
I was looking into getting a Little Mark III but then I saw the price of the PF500 and started wonder why the price gap is so huge, both are great companies, is there a simple explanation? Have I overlooked a huge difference in the amps? Any info would help, thank you
Edit: Was also looking at the Aguilar TH500 before settling on the LMIII, strictly for budget purposes, which is why the price gap between the three makes me really want to know why I should pay more for one or the other
