Why aren't G&L basses more popular?

Most people use Fenders because they have no imagination. They see everyone else using them so they use one too. They also use the exact same tone as everyone else. That's what I call nondescript. You should be looking for your tone, not everyone else's.

Played a few G & L basses at a music store in Atlanta and a classic Stingray... The Stingray weighed about 10 lbs and was still lighter than the L2000 and L2500. I'll stick with my Clement basses for now... Though the new Bongo's are nice and come with lightweight tuners.

Interesting...this was started (over two years ago) by someone whose only comment was "And.....go"

About 450 posts in his one and only comment was something along the lines of "Alright then..."

Obviously started as a sort of prank to see how long he could keep folks in the spin cycle?

That being said, I had one of the very first L-1000's and loved it...had it not gotten stolen, I'd probably still have it...early L2000's were great too.

Also my multicoil pickup will not be an exact copy of the Wal, unlike quite a few of the companies that make J and P pickups. ;) They make exact copies of someone else's design. I made a lot of changes to the design.

I wasn't judging you, I was simply saying it was ironic. But the fact is, your design, no matter how different, is based largely on the imagination of someone else. In fact, your design wouldn't exist without it.

My other pickups are all new designs. And what have you designed?

Funny...I always thought gear was just an outlet for the player's imagination and it just waits for you to do something with it. My basses sound pretty unspectacular sitting in stands. But here I've been putting the cart before the horse all this time. The gear truly is way more important than what you do with it. I thank you for that revelation.

I'm attracted to the Fender Jazz the same way I'm attracted to a classic Corvette. The design is like a famous work of art that is functional, especially when I'm looking at it as I'm playing it.

Soundwise, I choose it after hearing all the others and still preferring the Fender Jazz .

This thread surprised me. In my perception G&L have always been firmly based over here in the Netherlands and in Germany. There are quite a few of them on the second hand market and most large stores sell new ones. Before the rise of other fenderesque american brands like Lakland and Sadowsky as polular brands they were probably close in popularity to musicman. maybe our importing company has a better marketing strategy?

If G&L is just Leo trying to out do himself, just slabs with no style or sound of their own,:bassist:
Then way pray tell, do we see more P & J basses for sale or trade on TB then G&L or any other brand for that matter, if they are the be all end all, wouldn't players keep them?:confused:

Funny this thread was at the top of the postings this morning. I'm looking for what will be my next and was getting ready to pull the trigger on a MM Sterling when I came across a G&L SB-2 in a small shop. It sounded and played amazing. I used to play Sterlings back in the early 90s before I cut my hair and got a job, and I always regretted selling them. Today is the first day I haven't had that much regret. Now if only I could find a USA used one, though GASing so bad new is not out of the question.

I don't have any G&L anymore, but I do have two G&L MFD P loaded Precisions.

I may be back someday, but I don't care for any of thier 5's, and I don't play 4's much, and I like my scruffy old P basses....
