Why aren't G&L basses more popular?

There is a G&L dealer across the street from my office. A couple years ago I went in there to check out guitars with a friend. While he was noodling away on an acoustic, I picked up an SB-2 Tribute to check out. Long story short, I was completely blown away by the sound and playability of it.

For our 10th anniversary, my wife bought me the bass!

Earlier this year, I was out shopping around for my first five-string at BassNW. Once again, the tone and playability of the M2500 tribute did it for me and I bought one.

Most recently, I had an itch to upgrade from my CV jazz bass to something nicer. After being disappointed in the dark tone of the new Am. Std. jazzes, I found a used G&L JB and bought it instead. I've been extremely happy with it so far.

Nice basses but they don't offer a 1 7/8" nut for a 5'er. I need it a little wider than they offer.

We had a local dealer here who carried them for about a year. I asked him why they quit and he said they just sat there.

I never had a bad G&L, one fretless L-2000 seemed to have the Fender dead spot at fret 5 on the G string.
I just bought a Legacy on E-bay, which has not shipped.
Seems not to be perfectly stock, but hope it has the sweet fast neck ,11/16 and original PUPs. Cheaper than buying an American P.

Because it doesnt have a distinctive design. It looks so much like Fender and Musicman.

I had a Black ASAT and a Blueburst L2000 Tribute. Both great basses but sold them to fund a custom build. My custom is great, but would love to have them back! I am currently looking at the M2000 GTS series.

I recently picked up an all white m2000 tribute. I think it's a great bass. Plays and sounds terrific.

This thread is great. Pretty much decided me on an SB-2 Tribute when tax time comes, and I'll keep the Dimarzio J idea in mind I have a question for the SB-2 Tribute owners, how do flatwounds sound on them?

Is that the Legacy with the sort of Tobacco burst and white pickguard that sold on the 16th? I was one bid shy of that thing! Aaaaaagh! Enjoy if that is it............

Owned one but never got a good tone out of it. Never tried another one after I sold it.

Introducing the new G&L M3500 (actually its a custom, but could be a cool new product).

The battery box is EXACTLY in the right spot to allow it. There was a paper thing slice of wood between the added route and the battery route. I was able to cut it out with an Exacto knife and route the wires thru it instead of drilling.

Don't know about the Tributes but I have chromes on my USA SB-2 and it sounds awesome!

I bet you'll like what you hear, the SB-2 loves all manner of flats. The biggest bass sound I ever heard was a 110ga set of Roto 77's on my SB-2.

Just marketing. Fender (and EB MM) are marketing machines. G&L builts more of their capital directly into the products. Jazz basses and Stingrays are great, but given the choice between the three, I'd chose the L2000 hands down.

I have the American SB-2 with TI Jazz Flats on it. I finally ponied up the bucks and all I can say is I will never put any other strings on my bass. They are worth ever dime.

It has 1954 LaBella bridge cables on it, so I dont think it makes much difference. I dropped the poles back into the pickups because the harmonics were too strong relative to the fundamental on an already growly pickup. Much better now.
