Why did acoustic make their 600H head 600 watts @ 2ohms, and then make all of their cabinets 8 ohms? You can't get the full power of the head unless you go with another brand,and make a full stack. Even their 8x10 is 4 ohms so that only allows you to push 300 watts through their 8x10,which hardly seems like enough power.

They have a 300w amp (if rated like most other manufacturers), but it sounds better to advertise a 600w amp. Just some more voodoo marketing!

The SVT is 300 Watts at either 4 or 2 Ohms, it was mandatory to drive 2 8x10's with it in 1969. What is wrong with driving 2 8x10's with a 600 Watt acoustic amp? Cheers.

You might think that - but I've got one that I run at 2 ohms and that thing is a monster. It's huge, weighs a lot, and I wouldn't count on it to take the rigors of touring - some of the knobs and switches are pretty light duty. But if it's going to sit in a rehearsal space and do around town gigging, this is a great deal on a good-sounding, powerful amp.

I've used it to power two 4-ohm Schroeder cabs. It's a very well-heard combination.

I'm not an expert on amps and cabs, but IMO the 2 Ohm amps' cool fact is that these will allow more freedom when matching cabs - either being able to use more than 2 cabs, or interesting missmatches like a 2X10@8Ohm + 4X10@4Ohm It sucks if 1 cab is more than enough for your needs, but then again, usually the 2 Ohm amps are powerful, not the 100W kind of amp So if you need less power, there are plenty of options that will work better than a 2Ohm amp. My 2 cents...

You don't have to go to other brands. You can hook up four of the 4x10 for a 2Ω load, or two of the 8x10, or go for looks instead of sound and have a two stacks of a 1x15 with a 4x10 on top for each stack. They all total 2Ω. And the very important point is that running a single 4x10 with 600 WRMS won't make as much noise as running two 4x10 with the same power. Most of getting volume and sound out is moving air, and that's much more dependent on having speakers than it is having amplifier.

Perhaps. But if was only offered as 8 ohm stable then all the pissing and moaning would be about how you can't use more than one 8 ohm cab. And since 'getting all the watts out' has little to no bearing on the final result there's no point in bemoaning the fact. Just think of it as a 210 watt amp and get over it.

That's really the key point though--they want people to think of it as a 600W head, not a 210W head. So the "average GC consumer" can perhaps be forgiven for believing they're buying a 600W head no matter what cab they buy.

Caveat Emptor. In a perfect world all amps would be rated RMS into 8 ohms- once upon a time they pretty much were- and the only mention of any lower impedance load would be restricted to whether or not the amp could safely operate into it. But the world ain't perfect.
