Why did you decide to play bass?

After playing Rock Band for the first time I decided to give the real thing a shot.

That's what made me pick the guitar (my first instrument ever). I was playing with some other guys who almost always gave me the bass "position" eventhough I wanted to be the guitar... In retrospect, I was like anyone else who doesn't know better (i.e. thought that the guitar was the "koolest thing evar" and wanted to play it). I was deluded into wanting to be a lead guitarist, eventhough I don't like the spotlight and I like to groove to the music much more than shredding all over the place.

But being the "bassist" in Rock Band may have been a prophesy of what I would become a couple years later.

I swear, I was destined for bass. As a kid, I always found myself humming and thinking about the basslines in a song. I was always frustrated because I could never find an instrument that interested me, and I'd play them for a week and get bored. Then, when I was 13, I learned that it was actually an instrument. I always thought it was a synth playing those low notes. Couple months later, my parents bought me my first one, and I've been playing since. Oddly, my older brother was a bass player too, which I never knew.

my mom always told me that the coolest member of any band is the bass player. she always pointed out the bass and how it makes you move. i had to buy a bass, i just didnt see it any other way

I had this habit of humming along with bass lines...I was a keyboard player at the time.

Then Geddy and the boys played my High School.

Spent my next paycheck on a Bass, the rest is history.

Quite honestly, guitar intimidated me. Too many notes (so I thought at 13) so I decided I'd play something "easy." I was young and dumb.... well younger and dumber I had no idea I was picking up the most important instrument in the band! Been loving every second of it since.

I was more into doing sound, but piddled on guitar… no intension of being in a band, just to play/sing little tunes I liked and wrote.

Then my buddy talked me into getting a drum kit for my music room.

A buncha musicians stormed the place, kicked me to bass, and dragged me on to the stage.



At least that's how I remember it...
