Why did you start playing bass?

Bass is my natural instrument. I was just in denial for nearly 40 years and kept playing guitar.
That's me exactly! I filled in on bass occasionally while being mainly a guitar player. It wasn't until I auditioned against 4 other people for a bass player spot in a classic rock band (and got it) that I realized that I love playing bass more than ever. In the last year and a half I've become better on bass than I ever was on guitar.

I STARTED PLAYIN BASS COS DAMN THING WOULDN'T PLAY ITSELF!
Kind of by accident - I played cello in orchestra in elementary school, then moved on to double bass when I got taller. Then I realized that bass 'guitar' was an equivalent thing, and came over to the cool side.
Sort of by accident. I started playing guitar because that is what my mom had in her closet and then a friend of mine had a cheapo electric guitar so I got kicked off on that at 13. When I was about 17, I came in contact with a bass and there was a transcription of Ramble On in a guitar magazine I had. I just found myself playing and playing and playing. I still play guitar... but that's almost more of study device now. ...what's really weird is I have 5 guitars and 1 bass. hahahaha

I realised I was only OK at guitar and there were too many good guitarists around. I chose the bass at the age of 18 because I could get gigs and I'm so happy I did. 46 years later I'm still playing nearly every week.
I think it was Cure's Disintegration album, Fascination Street to be exact
When I first felt that rumble go through my torso and groin, then scramble my brain, I knew I had to have it at my fingertips.
I was the only one on stage not holding an instrument, and neither of them was holding a bass.
Friend of mine was a guitarist and wanted someone to jam with. He peer pressured me into trying the bass and from the moment I hit that open E string, I was obsessed. It was all I could think about for weeks before I could get enough money to but my first bass and amp.
I'm pretty much the "basic," default story for a lot of people. Guitar player who slipped into the role because there was need. Still love the guitar, but I definitely feel like picking up the bass changed my musical career/life/ambitions, I'm not looking back.
