Why do bass hard shell cases have space for guitar straps?

Actually my EB-3 copy has a compartment you can't even fit a strap in very well--it's tiny--I have the bridge cover (This bass's version of an ashtray) in there and maybe some small stuff)
My SR 500F I have a good teardrop case that has a large compartment that would easily contain you wide strap and more.

I have this problem with the stock case for my SG special. I get my strap and a cable in barely. I've got a backpack that keeps all my essentials (di, extra cable, spare strings, mic, tablet with charts, paper charts, pedals, some batteries, headphones) and that helps. I can fit about half of that in my reunion blues bag, but I get what you mean. Doesn't the case building industry understand how much crap some if us bassists like to bring!

I have a Gator case, when I go to a rehearsal that is all I take. It holds lots of gubbins :-

Bass, Strap, 20foot lead, tuner.
SM58, 20 foot XLR.
Note pad, pen, lyric/chord charts for new songs.
Tascam DR40 recorder, power supply, mini tripod, USB lead.
(It is an art to pack all this in.)

To a gig it holds Bass, strap, lead, any other gubbins goes in my gig case.

The answer to the thread title is so you can put your strap in there. And a few other things.

The answer to the first post is different. I believe the whole wide strap thing is a relatively recent thing, and I assume you are talking about fender or fender like cases. Cause back in the days they came out, they did not have wide straps, and being that Fender heritage is one of the most important thing about the brand, they keep their cases like they used to.

And lastly, i'm assuming the actual answers to the question aren't what we are after. Thank you, I'm here all week…...
