Why do guitarists get all the cool looking gear?

I feel the pain. I really dig vintage gear, and I do think we got the short end of the stick, but it's mostly about numbers. Because we need more watts, bass amp design has turned to much more of an engineering feat than pure aesthetics.

Case in point: I love my little GK MB150 in all of it's tiny solid state goodness - but the thing looks like R2D2... it's ugly. What I'd really want is the bass version of this:

Cute little tweeded out thing, all tube, and can fully compete in a band setting and sounds badass. When that comes out for bass players - sign me up!

yeah the swart AST or a daab tupelo honey would be killer... maybe i should think about a genz benz shuttle rehoused in a vintage style head... over some nice tweed aguliar cabs... mmmmm

I just played mine at youth group tonight, and it was phenomenal! All you guys who want a tweeded out amp, don't forget about recovering, and there are a few places out there that can make custom face plates pretty easily.

i happen to think the pro line of GK looks good....its a good mix of form and functionality.....like a mullet....business in the front, party in the back...but you can tweak that to your liking

Becasue guitaristst are shallow and vapid. They think how an amp looks actually matters in any way. By nature, they don't understand anything about music so it's all about image.

Never, ever compare GK to a mullet, ever again.

It's just wrong. Plain wrong.

Now I've got an image of a trailer, a can of Budweiser, and a drunk guy with a trucker hat and a GK T-shirt stuck in my head.

(For the record, I'm just ribbing you, but I still fail to grasp how GK could ever be even remotely analogous to a mullet... different strokes for different folks, I guess )

Oh yea orange amps seem cool, never tried one of the bass amps but it certanly is something i would like to try out man..

I thought Orange amps were originally used on both bass and guitar? Anyhow, NO WAY do guitarists have a wider variety of designs. If you look at guitars, there are very few body shapes, and they are mild in design. The most original part is the headstock that identifies the brand. With bass guitars, the body shapes are often as branded as the headstock shape. The designs range from mild to extreme, from paint to intricate natural wood patterns (coffee table?). Bass amps also come in wider ranges of designs. I get the picture that some don't like the new markbass design, but I think it's simply that yellow isn't anyone's favorite color. Personally I think it's a sharp design for the most part that will lead people to purchase more markbass brand products to make a matching set instead of mixing and matching brands.

Yeah, they were. Matamps are either/or amplifiers, but it's been a long time since the days of the original Orange Matamps.

and as for Markbass's design, I agree heavily with whoever said that they look like Power Tools...
(Markbass gets away from Guitar Center, signs exclusive distribution with... Home Depot?!)

No no no! This isn't supposed to be a guitarist or gear bashing thread!

What I should have said was - why do you think Guitarists get a much wider variety of gear styles than Bass players?

Because on average they spend two to three times as much on their gear AND there are a lot more of them.

We need to start requiring ALL new bands to have at least two bass players. Three would be "perfect bass" (pardon the pun! ) Lead bassist, rhythm bassist and bass bassist!
