I've owned and loved a MIM Fender Jazz for three years, but this forum has made me wanna try a Precision. So bad to the point of buying a cheap Squier P for experimentation, not to exclude modding. Please talk me out of this craziness?

What's the point of not having a P bass?
P bass is great for some things, but personally, I prefer the jazz for versatility. I recently got a killer p bass, and would favor it for certain songs, but the J is what i bring to the gig
You should try a bigger screen. Technically, you should want a G&L at this point.
I do, but I need something in the cheap range. I'm kinda broke. All my money has gone to paying for A&P school.

A P will sit in the mix perfectly in pretty much any kind of music there is, without a lot of EQ. Just plug it in and go. I use it in my soul/classic rock band, I use it in my hard rock/punk band, it sounds equally good in both. It isn't "versatile", because it doesn't need to be. It just sounds good. Always. You can go from fat old school tone, to bright metal with a turn of the tone knob. All I'll ever need (not necessarily all I'll ever want though...
).

The P is the studio standard. Something like 75% of all hit records were recorded using a P, regardless of what the bassist uses live or endorses. If you turn on the radio chances are very good you are hearing a P.

P is for grandpas. A 6 string fanned-fret Ibanez is the "new P". 
You're right it's crazy. . . . . to buy a cheap P bass. Spend more and get a great one.
Keep out of TB for a week. It helps my GAS attacks a lot.
The worst thing you you can do to yourself is to pigeonhole yourself with a title. A jazz guy. A P guy. You place mental limitations on yourself which leads to physical ones. Neither bass is more or less than the other. THEY ARE JUST DIFFERENT!
Keep your jazz and save for a P. I've tried the one or the other attitude and I can testify that it is useless. Especially after playing one exclusively for a period of time, at some point there will be qualities of the other you will wish you had available. I am a PROUD P bass lover. But I own a P, P/J and 4 jazz basses. And I love them all.
