Why do I see less DI than mics at local shows?

not at all. I can't tell you what any of them are for sure. Some 'look' inappropriate for bass cab though.

I knida go with what they sound like, instead of what they look like.

Some of them might work. I thought you said you liked 421s (?)

Here's a shot from this past summer with my NV610 miced up with a PR40. It sounded excellent out front that day, which is actually somewhat surprising, considering the building I was under had a high aluminum roof. A few weeks later, I played a large concert with a national and I actually ran my JDI in parallel out of another tube amp I brought. I was using an AE410 on that gig. And while it has its own coloration, I wasn't as concerned about capturing its mojo for the FOH as much as I was with the NV.

I kinda assume all bulbous fronted mics are kickdrum specific with lumpy tailored response so I would rather something else. I wouldn't know a 421 if you hit me over the head with it in your haste to put it in front of my cab but I might assume it is suitable if you say so.
