Why Do Legendary Bassists play such Cheesy Material???

But all too often, this is not the case...consider the Minutemen, who were much better technicians (in particular, D. Or, Eddie Van Halen, who's written some of the catchiest melodies ever, yet is the prototype of the modern technical guitarist. The list could go on...

Point is, there's no hard and fast relationship, and anyone who says there is needs to take a stats class.

My favorite VH album is Balance............and you know what? Eddie had short hair during that album. I'm starting to think your theory holds true.

I disagree with Smash though, I always thought Eddie was a great shred guitarist for his solos were always melodic and memorable. Now Yngwie Malmsteen, Ugh, I just can't get into guitar wankery like that.

Pete, I', gonna have to disagree with you.

Metallica's cheez factor didnt show up until the "Black Album" which IMHO was an abomination, and the albums after that, are IMO some of the worst material I have ever heard by anyone, at any time. AJFA is HEAVY AS HELL. Check out "Blackened", "Harvester of Sorrow" and "Dyers Eve." I f---ing LOVE that album. It is the last semblance of good music for those bastards, who DEFINE the world sellout. They put it on the map.

Check out old Aquarium Rescue Unit stuff back when they were with Col. Bruce Hampton. He brought the best out of everyone in his band. The bass playing (and everything else) is "legendary". Whether it's your cup of tea or not, there was nothing cheesy about that lineup.

I love that jaco song, "Blackbird" a lot. It truly shows his brilliant compositional skills.

Cheesiest CD I've ever bought is "Thunderfingers - The Best of John Entwistle". I got it because of a lot of opinions expressed here about Entwistle. I'd, of course, heard his Who stuff and was intrigued by what he was doing there but his "best of" absolutely sucks!! How could he name an album "Thunderfingers" and not have one memorable lick on the entire album?? And as for his songwriting...pure smegma!

's ball and chain. He always had to make his presence known even when it wasn't approriate. I hate Zawinal's playing on 8:30. The fact that he doubled Jaco's bass lines is disgusting and representative of a real *******. I hate him. I hate his music. I hate his playing. Don't blame Jaco for the crappy sounding tunes on 8:30.

Zawinal should be the target of your frustration.

I think 8:30 is great !
Zawinool was cool... On the 8:30 shows, I bet they had some sort of a bet that he couldn't double the basslines, and that's why he did it ! -I'm sure they laughed for hours after the gig... Jaco was a great composer and arranger, and was never even remotely cheezy... I can agree that some of Jaco's later compositions (for example some of the "word of mouth"-stuff were too fierce and frantic, but from say '76 to '81, Jaco was KING in any musical term...
