I know it sounds like an assumption, and that it is my own experience, but its with multiple older people, and most stereotypes have some truth to them. My boss is probably an A hole but I've been thinking and I believe that many times it comes from feeling that they were or are better than the younger people of today and that they came from a time when "getting things done" or the pillars of life, showing up on time, putting in a full days work, etc.

By the way, this guy is worth at least 10 million, prob 20 with properties, but doesn't want to or won't give it up.
