WHY DO PEOPLE KNOCK SR NECK WIDTH`S ?

Im at a loss why people slam " pencil neck " Ibanez SR`s when they have the same 38mm nut width as a Jazz Bass , is it a depth thing as well ? . Ive read people saying they hate Soundgear necks , and then read on to see they have a Jazz in their arsenal ... I dont understand .

1) why would *anyone* care what anyone else says?
2) When these basses came out back in the late '80s/early '90s, they were ALL the rage. Now, chunky necks are the flavor of the week. Soon enough thin necks will be the "new cool". And then they won't...

I think it's neck was patterned after a mandolin neck template.

I absolutley LOVE the neck on my 88 SR800LE but HATE the sound of it. It's got a very narrow range where I can get any tones I like.

I'm now mainly playing a Lakland JO4 CS (skyline) and the tone of that thing is amazing. I do notice the wider heel and also miss having 24 ftrets. Now, if I could get that tone out of my SR I would be in heaven.

My current dream bass is for a 24F Sadowsky JJ with the same neck profile as my SR and Lakland CS single coil pickups. Don't think it will ever happen unless I build it myself.

Been thinking about changing out my pickups and electronics in the SR but I'm not sure what I want.

I've only owned one SR and it was beautiful and sounded great (don't remember the model, maybe an 800), but the maple neck was "floppy" to me. If you pulled back a little the strings would fret out, and if you pushed a little they'd go high over the fingerboard. I'm not talking about intentional cranking, just normal moving around would cause it. I haven't purchased another Ibanez since then but the ones with harder wood necks are starting to appeal to me now. I strongly believe the neck size contributed directly to the floppy neck.

My SR400 was the most unstable of my basses. The neck relief would need to be reset often due to climate changes.

i totally dig the ibanez neck, it just makes playing so much easier

Yeah, that's the best thing I love about my SR300. It gives my fingers a vacation.

I have an SR300 and a USA Jazz with the "modern C" neck. The thickness is different between the two and it gives me a little trouble bouncing back and forth. Once I get used to one I get cramps while playing the other. I can't fault either guitar as they are just different but I do notice I am faster on the Ibanez.

The neck on the Ibanez is definitely more narrow at the heel but I have the string spacing on the Jazz adjusted similar to the Ibanez which helps.
