Why do people mess up good basses?

Sorry to go all philosophical, but do you see my point? It could be argued either way. So, I guess if you love your bass, I say don't do anything to it, it'd be like giving it a tattoo, I guess

dude nothing personal. It could of been towards anyone, even someone i agreed with and it would of still been funny. Plus, the question wasn't what you thought about western culture so why did even have to bring it up in the first place.
As someone who has drawn all over some of my instruments and modded some to hell and back, I can tell you it does raise the value. To me at least. I put time and effort into making the instrument look a certain way, so I value it more. You might think it looks worse, but I sure don't.

now he's never going to be able to get anything close to what he paid for >:O

Generally, I don't care what someone else does to an instrument they own. They paid for the right. However, if a teeny bopper bought Jaco's bass, spray-painted it pink and stuck "Hello Kitty" stickers all over it, most of us on this board would be a bit peeved. A select few instruments stop being tools and start becoming history.
I treat my own gear like I do my cars. When they're new, they're like a work of art to me and I try to keep them looking like new. Once they get that first ding, they're tools.

I'm sure he stays awake at nights, worrying about what people think of his outfits, or his putting stickers on an old Fender...
That' s the funniest thing I've read all day.
That's how I feel about the issue. I'm not the kind o put sticker on my bass, I'd rather spray paint it. Tommorow, I'm going to pick up a new strat and turn into a shortscale.
You seem to be saying that they are people "just because" of the feeling you have towards them. I would venture to guess that if you were to withdraw your "meaning and love", they would still be people.
I don't know your family, but I'm pretty sure that they transcend being "just animals" and "mere matter" regardless of what you think or feel about them - it's called "innate value".

Sharpie is easy to remove (assuming it is a glossy finish). Fender Swirl & Haze Remover from their Instrument Care Kit will take it right off. It is made by Meguiar, and as far as I know it is the same as the Meguiar Swirl Remover made for cars. Turtle Wax also makes one.
I wouldn't worry about Sharpie on a bass. It will come right off.

All metaphors aside, people mess up good basses because that's what they want. More power to them. I see what people mean with the peeing on the Mona Lisa and putting hello kitty stickers on Jaco's bass.
