I just like buying stuff. I don't need 6 basses, 4 amps, a pedal board (that constantly changes), an 810, a practise amp......oh wait yes I do 
I like trying new stuff. Like most of us, I see a YouTube vid or read a TB thread and BAM I'm searching for the best price on something.

I want what I think is the best stuff. I've tried compromising before, and it's not satisfying enough for me. So now; my philosophy is to save up for what I really want, even if it takes years. There's nothing wrong about waiting for the good things in life IMO. 
I have some cheaper stuff too, acoustic guitars to travel with and for use at parties and nachspiels and stuff; these have solid tops but sides and backs are laminated; a Sigma 00R-28VS (rosewood); and a Epiphone Olympic (mahogany); I won't spill beer into the soundholes of my Martin or Gibson!

What I want has also changed over time. Years ago, Alembic was my dream bass. Nowadays, I
basses that are much more in the Fender mold. Lately, it seems that PJ basses have caught my ear. Some people latch on to a sound early on and keep it. Many of shift and change over time. This is true for hobbyists like me, but some of the greatest players ever like Lee Sklar, Abraham Laboriel, Nathan East, or Chuck Rainey, have changed basses over the years.

Typically, I buy in response to a perceived need -- something I want my gear to do and feel like it isn't capable of.
Most of the time I'm "dreaming the need into existence".
Like, I love the idea of a Neo cab, but I'm perfectly capable of schlepping my pair of 410 cabs.
And, paradoxically enough, the more financially secure I get, the fewer major gear purchases I feel compelled to grasp at. (Or maybe all the gear purchases are what stretched my finances...)
Fortunately, my latest gear obsession has been stomp boxes -- relatively cheap and easy to ship/flip when needed.
Building my own, and tweaking them to my personal preferences has been a ton of fun.

New instruments inspire me, and because I can.
Delving a bit deeper - when I was a kid my parents bought me knockoff sneakers, fake leather, and the least expensive stereos in the Radio Shack catalog. As soon as I realized I could buy whatever I wanted, I did. I buy responsibly, making fairly certain I can get back whatever money I put into a bass I purchase and therefore feel like it's just money in the bank. Should note that my parents were very good to me in other ways, and that frugality insured that they had a nice retirement, and were able to bail any of their kids out - whenever their kids needed bailing out
Joe Nerve hit a nerve. Never had money for myself, but always had money for school, wives, kids. On my own, now, paid off almost everything and for the last six years have bought what I want. Now I feel guilty.

I think I'm fairly reasonable. I voted "gear needs". In have an OCD where if I don't use gear, I don't keep it. I limited myself on 2 basses (for now) that are used in 3 bands and are my 2 favorite tones (P and Ray). Same applies for pedals and amps/cabs. I keep only what I require and I there's nothing I can't play through GK 2001RB and 412 GK NEO or 410RBH. As for pedals - limited myself on 8 pedals that fit my board. All I need. That said, I do get GAS attacks but only for stuff I could use. I sure would love a Classic natural/maple neck Stingray..
Most of my gear acquistions stem from need, but sometimes, they're purely for experimentation. So many knowledgeable folks on this board, I can't help but try out new gear if anyone recommends something I don't have. But, you know, money. So, yeah.
I blame TB....never heard of Maruszszck (sp.), saw a thread here, started looking into them; I could use a descent P bass....Oh! they make medium and short scale!....and on it goes...
