I guess the real question, regardless of the bass involved, is this: if you had to choose one of two basses, would you play the one that sounded best to your own ears on stage, or the other one that everyone in the audience tells you sounds better than the one YOU like? I always did the former. Fortunately, whenever I played a P on a gig, I liked the on-stage sound and got compliments from the audience to boot. I like J's too, but they were always a little bit harder for me to hear in the mix than a P.

Why does everyone else sound good on a P and I don't?

I'm sure the Grammy's had top notch soundmen ensuring that pretty much any decent bass in the hands of the pros playing them would sound great for the broadcast audio feed.
If YOU don't like how YOU sound with a P - don't play it. No matter what is sounds like to somebody else you should play whatever inspires you IMO. For you it's P basses - for me, it's Stingrays. Sure, I've heard OTHER players sound great using Stingrays. I sound like a$$. I don't sweat it - just move on to something that I like.
