Why does everyone hate Squire's????

Depends on the Squier I guess.
The bass on the right is my '86 MIJ Jazz. It's been my main bass since I've owned it.
The bass on the left is my newly purchased Classic Vibe jazz. When I went shopping for a backup it was my intention to buy a used MIM standard jazz. After playing about 10 of them, I bought the Classic Vibe.
I love my squier..it's a 1984 SQ serial # and is just about the best P-Bass I have ever played...USA or other..
I have a Squire bronco. it hummed like crazy, sounded terrible, and the pickguard screws are all crooked.
If I had bought it to play straight out of the box, I would have returned it to the shop. The pickup it comes with isn't even a bass pickup. There's 6 pole pieces. Someone just grabbed the cheapest singlecoil guitar pickup they could find, and chucked it in there.
After I swapped the bridge (just a cheap one) and threw in a $45 GFS MM style pickup, it's a really nice bass to play, and sounds great.
If I was buying another cheap bass, I'd take an Ibanez over a squire any day. Unfortunately I wanted a short scale, and didn't want to wait for it.
I'm happy I bought it, and the end result sounds and feels great, but I can't say I'd recommend it.

That 'Cat Eyes' pickguard is too cool! Where'd you get it?
I fondled a bunch of Fenders, USA, MIM etc and the CV is super nice. MIM Special Deluxe Active is next to the CV, been playing on the CV more often lately.
I think, after 7 years, the title need changing? We love Squiers now! Damn Luke, those piccys get me every time... love the headstock pic. I would be tempted to swap out the machines though.
Strangely enough, that pickup is historically correct. Using a covered 6 pole Mustang/Duosonic guitar style pickup in an "student model" bass is a long-time Fender tradition and was used in the original Musicmaster Bass since it's introduction in the mid-'60s.
I gigged my Broncos stock for a while but have since used them as a modding platform and still gig them. An EMG SA (for Strat) pickup works very well in the Bronco.

quite frankly i love my squier jazz for a few reasons
1. if i got a fender i would be afraid to play it
2. ive droped my squier jazz bass like 50 times and its never fallen out of tune
3. the way i play live i think id need to send it to the shop alot
4. once you get them set up to your own liking there amazing
5. they can take a ****ing beating
6. if you do break them then parts are cheep
7. if you break one so its un fixable then you can get one 2nd hand for under £100
so show some love to my squier jazz bass

Thank you. I really get mixed reactions to that pickguard. I bought it from one of those pickguard places that advertise on ebay. I did a quick search and didn't see another one today.
Very nice! I keep toying with the idea of making something like a DiMarzio Chopper for my Bronco Affinity but surprisingly the stock one sounds pretty good so replacing it would just be for experimentation purposes... and maybe reduce what little hum there is.
Squire has really turned it around these days with their offerings that are not really intended for the beginner. I think that with the release of their CV and VM basses they have really stepped up offering some basses that would normally cost more than the average player can afford to just add something to the collection. I love my 70s VM Jazz and all I've done is put some flats on it. I'm sure I'll add a CV P to the collection because all bass players really should have a P whether it's a fender brand or some other builder.
I own the Squier CV Jazz and find its my most comfortable bass to play. The overall feel is nice. But the tone just isnt top notch to me. Ive tried several types of strings. I just cant get a tone I like , too much midrange and zing. Ive played it out of Carvin and Genz Benz amps. I prefer my MIM Jazz Delux way way more. another addition here, I think the nuts are crappy on the CV also.
I wonder if that's yet another long-time Fender tradition since I've never met a Fender that couldn't benefit from some work on the nut.

Squiers a cheap basses. But i'd rather spend $300 on a Squier then $1000+ on a "Fender" if i know both basses are going to be cheap quality. A lot of the time your paying for the brand name.
If you want to play some nice Squiers... Look into the Japanese Vintage series (JV) basses they were making in Japan during the 80's. I have an 82 jv. its great!
Check out the Vintage squiers they have recently brought out...not bad for the price...
