Why does my bass sound distorted in cubase?

If it's an active bass then there is your problem,
Try to put it on a passive mode and record on low level volume.
Usually the distortion will come on the mic input jack cause it's not supposed to handle thing's like a bass and etc.
Try to see if you have an aux input on your card and record from there.
BTW, what kind of card you use to record? if it's built in, get a better one. anything less than Creative Audigy will distort the guitar.

Ahhh I didn't realise it being active would do that... funnily enough it never twigged that it seems much worse on my active 5 string than on my 4 string!
Our sound card is just a rubbish inbuilt one but can't afford a better one at the moment so looking for 'best of a bad situation' solution. lol. Luckily it's just for recording ideas and sending them over to the guitarists etc but it'd be nice to be able to get a half decent recording!
