Why does TB navigation do this?

It's just the way the Matrix is.

If I understand you correctly, and I’m not sure I do, this is how every forum I have ever used works. And it’s the correct way, in my opinion.

If you view the right arrow as ‘the logical next page’ instead of ‘forward/backward in time’, it makes sense.

Forum pages and threads are very different. Forum pages are lists that constantly change, where the order represents the last activity on the thread. Threads are conversations that are meant to be read in order. In both cases, I expect the ‘next page’ button to behave as it does, and I associate that button with an arrow pointing to the right.

So to be clear consider the following.

On one of these, clicking left takes you to the oldest and clicking right takes you to the newest. Whilst on the other one, clicking left takes you to the newest and clicking right takes you to the oldest. And that’s how it’s supposed to work?

One idea would be to replace prev and next with older and newer.

Or their function could be aligned.

The idea that threads are meant to be read from the start breaks down when you have decades-old threads with thousands of posts.

Yes. The newest thread is on top, at “1”. But inside of a thread the oldest post, the beginning of the thread, is on top, at “1”.

This makes sense to me.

I tried this on my Android phone using the Chrome browser. The behavior was different for me. Tapping on the right (Next or the double arrow pointing to the right) always took me to older threads and forums. Previous, or the double arrow pointing left, always took me to newer posts and forums.
I didn't see an option to control that part of the user experience in the forums. Perhaps other members will share their experience and operating system too. That may give us insight into what's going on here.

It is true the default forum behavior puts newest threads at the top, while putting newest posts within a thread at the bottom. To change the order of posts in a thread to "newest post first", we would be changing a 20-year old default that I suspect would cause quite a bit of confusion...

Changing the text to "older" and "newer is an interesting idea...
