Why have so many basses?

Also a lot of people are collecting thinking that a lot these instruments are going to be really valuable one day, don't think so in a lot of cases. there are just way too many Fenders and Gibsons etc being made and all distributed around the world. just too many. what is valuable is what was always valuable are 50s and 60s perhaps 70s gems.

So one minute you’re saying that it’s collectors fault there aren’t enough to go around, now you say that it’s the collectors fault that they make too many at a lower quality? Did you just want to complain or?...

Some people with meager talent love music and find musical instruments intriguing. They actually attempt to play them. There are basses that are considered works of art more than they are a working musician's tool. What would Nigel Tufnel do? You'd never even see if a custom Ritter if he owned it. He is in a working band, but isn't a great virtuoso on the bass. Seriously, if any item (bass, amp, pedal, pick, lava lamp on a stand next to your amp...) helps you to play better or to write better, by all means get it. Music is a creative art and needs inspiration to flourish. Imagine you're a songwriter trying to come up with the perfect bass line to something you're working on and in your head it calls for a certain sound, for example a classic Ric clank. You have three basses nearby to use in order to figure out the bass part. You wouldn't reach for the EB-O or the '63 P bass, the 4001 would be your first choice. As a songwriter who doesn't play the bass as his/her first instrument, owning a dozen basses may be justified. What about the person who just loves the aesthetic appeal of basses. You must admit that there are some fantastic looking basses out there. What's wrong with appreciating them for that reason, even if you can't play a note? The more reasons there are for buying basses, the better, because that what keeps new instruments moving, and consequently makes it possible for the supply end of the 'supply versus demand' to remain vital. That will keep manufacturers competing with one another to create better instruments. Some day you may own one of them. When that day comes, thank the hack that hoarded T-Birds for making it all possible. :D

Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many expensive basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more great basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need 10 basses. was just wondering what others thought.

You haven’t demonstrated that the folks with a fat collection of bass guitars “can hardly play one.”

You might ask this question instead:
“Why do people have so many false conclusions when they can hardly think through the premises?”

See if that helps.

nail on the head...
Ive been playing since the mid 90's and can confidently say that the number of times ive seen a guy sucking on a great instrument are FAR less than the times ive seen someone ripping it up on a cheapo.

I can legally put a 30 round magazine in my AR-15...can you??? Also, why do all your rifles have fixed magazines?

I own multiple basses because I enjoy them all.
You are summing the Fun Police now.
Actually I'm surprised they haven't shown up yet. I bet they're waiting for just the right comment to lay down some law.

oldgarageband. what are you talking about? women. never mentioned them. also dude from californis suggests banning me. that is fine right? should always ban what you do not agree with.
I read all of your post twice over again, but could not find what I saw as a veiled comment about women.
This is due to one of several possibilities.
1. I attributed that to someone else.
That being the case, I owe you an apology. I appologize.
2. I imagined you saying it. Again it was an indirect shot. Not an overt comment against women.
In that case I also owe you an apology. I appologize.
3. The comment was edited or deleted before I could find it.
4. I've got eye strain and just keep missing it.

Here is what I took offense to, be it real, imagined or deleted. Perhaps someone else will have seen it and can remember or better yet quote. Until such time as that happens, my apology stands.

The comment was complimenting a person for something and then following up by saying something on the order of, and it was good if you are a woman too. The inference, if not the implication is that a female needs to be singled out for praise for something that you don't need to single out for a male. Humor is an example.
You're a funny guy. But if you're a woman, it is also funny.

See the TB thread about micro-aggression to better follow this line of reasoning.

But again, if you were not involved in any of that I retract what I said and apologize.
Old Garage Blamer.
