Why have so many basses?

You are summing the Fun Police now.
Actually I'm surprised they haven't shown up yet. I bet they're waiting for just the right comment to lay down some law.
Probably but when a Californian asks a question like that I have to answer. LOL

My collection is centered towards the low end of instruments as I can afford them. Got a nice SX Jazz for nothing and pretty much everything has been replaced. Will I get back what's been put into it if I sell it? No. That's not the point. It does make me happy when I play it.

There are a lot of people here who seem to have multiple of the same bass - 6 different P-basses for example. I understand collecting but that is a level of enthusiasm I have not reached.

I try to limit myself to basses that all have a different role. I have a P-bass, a J-bass, a two humbucker "modern" bass, a 6-string, and an electric upright. No two of them sound anything the same, and I do use them all, some more than others.
I've got three fretted and two fretless P basses and all of them sound unique.

for some people it is not a hobby.it is actually how they make their money. it is also very likely that because so many "hobbyists" are buying so much that the brand names are declining in quality. not to mention that the wait times are far greater to acquire what you need. in effect supply and demand.
I definitely agree with you, just look at Bass heros to find the answer and the right way. I have one Bass and it's becoming a part of me. I'll buy many Basses if i become a very busy session player(Just for cover all different tonalities).

I saw that too and thought it was just unintentional wording. I really dont think anything ill was meant.
Unfortunately, we live in a society where intent is no longer taken into account.
It is the offended who seems to be in the right regardless of intent or actual actions.

I made assumptions about a comment made by the OP based on other unrelated comments he made previously.
I assumed that since he had a high disregard for people who are not like him in one respect, that he also held other groups of people not like him, to not be worthy of what they have or have accomplished.
That is wrong for me to do that. Were my assumptions about the one comment colored by the previous comments?
Yes they were. It was still wrong of me to do that.
In fact, I am doing it again, right now and just realizing it.

I assume that the OP is male, simply based on some of his or her comments.
Wow! I am a real mess.
Is it possible for me to unlearn what six decades have made me out to be?
I don't know, and maybe not given some of my own responses in this thread.
That's not to say I can't try.

Anyway, as the old saying goes, it takes two fools to have an argument.
I'll do everyone else a favor and remove one of them from this conversation.

Personally, I love the taste of scorpion tears

Honestly, I dont think either of you have gotten out of line. Youre all good as far as Im concerned lol.

But yea, I see what you mean about things these days. Its not that people get offended too easily so much as the internet is full of unrelated individuals that will raise a torch to anything. Funny banter is fine.... and so is mutual ribbing... but man does it get out of control on some sites.
I wont even post on FB, insta or any other webpages because of it. You make one comment that disagrees and all of a sudden a third party is telling you to kill yourself or calling you a nazi lol. It really is absurd. But thats why I like it here... it never crosses the line. There are definitely debates and all that jazz but nobody gets nuts with it.

NOOOOOOO!

I've known some cymbal heads, so I've seen how big a set can get.
Tell me, though, how can one sell a cymbal only to decide one again needs "that" sound?
Does the true need for that tone really return? Or is the whole enterprise purely OCD-driven?

Because it’s exactly “that” sound. Cymbals are forged and you’re stuck with “that” sound. You can’t swap out strings or pickups and get a different vibe. So people run in circles a lot if their tastes change and come back again.

You bassists think you’re cute weighing your instruments....cymbal heads are talking in grams bro. “1800 grams is a dream weight for this size!”. Cymbals will vary in sound a weight a few hundred grams even if they are the same model.

It’s a good time, pick up drums and shift your GAS focus lol
