Why have so many basses?

There are a lot of people here who seem to have multiple of the same bass - 6 different P-basses for example. I understand collecting but that is a level of enthusiasm I have not reached.

I try to limit myself to basses that all have a different role. I have a P-bass, a J-bass, a two humbucker "modern" bass, a 6-string, and an electric upright. No two of them sound anything the same, and I do use them all, some more than others.

mordbass. i never use size as an intimidation. just looking for intelligent conversation. but i see there are a good number of very defensive personalities on here. so i am game.
dude, click the reply button on the actual post that you are replying to, not the whole thread. You dont have to type my name, just hit reply

If you think hipsters are all wimps, this is Jason Momoa, the guy who played Conan in the remake. He's a pretty big dude!

It was none of our concern until you posted it here on an international forum with a lot of players (or collectors) who fit your description.
You wouldn't walk into a room full of dudes wearing man buns & skinny jeans & proclaim loudly that you hate hipsters, would you?

Not when it's the same tired old question.
I agree with you. i have no problem with players who have a few instruments to round out a a toolkit. think my problem is with just less than mediocre players who compensate buy hoarding . just pointing out a truth.
Just because we're not mechanics, we shouldn't be allowed to own a set if wrenches?

You're just spinning the same argument with different material now.
Somewhat like spinning your wheels on ice, snow, in mud, or sand, you continue to floor the accelerator but you're just spinning. All you've done is managed to collect, and entertain, a lot if dumbfounded onlookers who have suggested that you're in so deep that you need a tow truck to get out if it.

Fun to watch though. ;)

I had a Squier classic vibe jazz for about 9 years as my only bass. Then I got a decent job and could afford things I couldn’t before and almost exactly a year ago I found a SUB Ray4 for $200 and bought it. Then I saw an early model Aerodyne in a pawn shop for cheap and bought that. Then an 80s Squier p. Then a Mustang PJ and now a MIJ Mustang. So over the course of a year I sold my Squier jazz and acquired 5 other basses. And a rumble 100 and a Black Star fly 3.

I just find stuff I like and start acquiring (within my means). I jam with friends occasionally but I’m not playing live gigs. I just like to collect I guess.
