Why have so many basses?

To further expand... I think another reason is that it can be a "disease." Seriously. I had that disease for most of my life. I lost count a long, long time ago, but I have owned at least 400 basses and guitars over the course of my playing years (not all at the same time, of course). That's a lot of money spent and I've never been what one would consider rich. Luckily, I'm more or less over the "disease" now and although I still have a few basses, I really only play two or three regularly. I've seriously considered selling all but one or two of them--perhaps two electric and my one upright. Hey, now there is motivation for playing only the upright... how many uprights can you collect unless you own a big warehouse? :D

Now, I'm a decent bassist, so I can't speak from the perspective of someone who can't play worth beans. I suspect that it's just something fun to collect for them and have, or the idea of buying more tools to throw in the toolbox thinking it will make them better "craftsmen." As I said before, why should it matter to anyone besides the person doing it? I really didn't have a legitimate reason for owning over 400 basses. I just bought them...

Who is insulting you?
No one has claimed you're compensating for something, have they?

Let me translate for you - he was asking if he walked into the hipster bar and someone insulted him - then he could unleash his 6' 240 lb fury on their man bun. But if not insulted, he would order a half-caf latte and sit in the corner, flogging his keyboard to point out the shortcomings of most TB'ers...
