Why I keep hammering the Carol Kaye pick method

Thanks, nice thread. As to picking technique, there are some inspiring videos on youtube demonstrating the right hand technique for gipsy guitar picking.

I'm glad you mentioned gypsy picking techniques. I studied that for years, and it's so similar. I was a crap gypsy jazz guitar player, and fair on rhythm, but the technique is perfect for picking bass. Watch Django and his brother, or today's great gypsy jazz players. Very inspiring.

I know it's an old thread, but I think it's a bit absurd to take a playing style that worked for someone else for specific styles of music/songs, and apply it to yourself as if it's gospel.

This one especially gave me a good chuckle.

I guess reinventing the wheel can be fun, even if it does do you in eventually.

I personally like to learn from other people’s mistakes, and hopefully avoid the painful learning curve. But that’s just me.

Hey, all I can tell you is I used to have pain when using a pick and now I don't. You not liking it is irrelevant in my world, but you go on with your bad self.

You a doctor, mate?

Last year I had a rash on my thigh for a few weeks. In that period, I probably drank a glass of milk at some point. That doesn't mean milk cures rashes.

Congratulations on your rash. So if I lapse into a technique I used to use and the pain starts right back within 30 seconds, then I correct myself and it stops immediately, it's because of something unrelated? Spare me.

Btw, I'm not your "mate."

:rollno:

You obviously don't know anything about Carol Kaye. She is not just some random bassist from some specific genre: She is one of the most recorded players of all time, across many genres including jazz. And her method is actually a "thing" which she has been teaching for decades to thousands of students individually (and via a series of videos.)

Nobody is preaching or receiving gospel here, but there are very good reasons why her method is worthy of study and emulation -- especially in terms of minimizing fatigue and injury.

I don't mind trying different techniques. In this case I was attracted to the thread to see if Carol's way had any similarities to what I've been doing for decades. It did, but isn't exactly like what I do. That's reasonable since everyone is different. Then again, her way might work better for me. I won't know unless I try it. I got no problem with that. But maybe it won't, for me, and I just keep trucking on the way I have been, as long as it works.

Carol's way might work well for many others. Nothing wrong with that.

Well...look at the thread title. It says, "Why I...", not, "Why you should..."

Maybe you didn't mean your post to sound the way it did. It's the internet.

Peace to you.
