Why is hard panning not used anymore?



This was a natural progression from bus assignment switches (A or B or A+B), adapted for stereo. That said, you could still pan things in-between by "multing" an input to two channels each assigned to a side, and then adjusting the volume between the two. Such a thing was rare because inputs were precious in this era, but this sort of thing did happen in film productions.
 
Was listening to ‘Papa was a rolling stone’ while doing a quick component check, and noticed like other recordings from the era it was mixed hard panned.
The mix still sounded great and the hard panning of the tracks really gave the track good separation and feel.

So the question is why does it seem like no one hard pans anymore on recordings?
Phase issues when summed?
Loudness wars?

Just not cool by today’s standards?
Mixes from the 60's through 70's were so varied and deserve serious study both mono and stereo versions when available for example The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Motown and Beach Boys are readily available. Those engineers had a serious challenge making those huge often very complex tracks translate in multiple mediums from a 4" car speaker, record player all in ones to proper stereo or quad playback systems. Panning across the stereo field can be exciting but also a real challenge to be sure there is no phase cancellation or smearing. Add to that a predominant number of listeners will be using a less than optimal playback so something that sounds great in a proper 2 speaker perfect triangle setup will sound off on a boom box, car stereo, headphones or in the more common these days horrible ear buds.

As an experiment listen to the same track in your available playback options, the listening experience will vary a wide amount and not just depending on the quality which also makes a contribution. Different speaker quality, size, rooms and placements contribute greatly then try your different headphone or earphones will enhance or detract from the experience.

When I do a mix I start on a pair of smallish studio monitors and will playback on multiple options as a test including headphones, larger studio as well as home stereo speakers and a sound bar to be sure everything translates then check on a mono speaker. Since I am using Harrison MixBus I will often build a "mono" mix using an aux send. I also use an older product from Focusrite VRM Box for comparison over multiple playback options in a range of headphones.

Music is my drug of choice and I often revisit my entry point as well as journey milestones using The Beatles "Sgt Pepper's" to refresh that experience. I recall riding my bike to buy the Lp and taking it home to listen om Mom's mono HiFi from the 50's sitting right in front of the speaker. That experience is better than any drug I would try later, it still is. When the 1st side finished I let it replay than on to side 2. Then the whole record again and again. A few years later I bought my first stereo and this was the first record I played. I still haver the Lp that is quite worn at this point and have several more copies on Lp as well as versions on CD.

It was never cool as far as I am concerned. I'd take mono over that every day of the week
 
Most people listen on headphones now and that kind of separation can be pretty painful to listen to.

Not to mention that a lot of times, particularly on cheaper productions, the master wasn't even hard-panned in the ideal sense of the word. Instead the engineer would just stick instruments in the left or right channels and only mix the lead vocal or soloing instrument in the center, and not even bother to pretend all instruments are in the same space.

I find it rather startling to have something like a horn section come blaring into just one ear while I'm listening to an older hard-panned recording on headphones. And even if you're listening with stereo speakers, if you're much closer to one speaker than the other, you're hearing too much of certain things and not enough of others. You have to be standing or sitting in the sweet spot in the middle where you can hear everything equally.

Panning is like any other part of recording/producing/mixing/mastering. It's not a matter of just doing it; it's a matter of doing it right.

My Dad’s 1970s Sony stereo which I use daily has a mode switch which allows you to play only the left or right channel in both speakers, reverse the panning, stereo of course and mono. It’s a lot of fun to play with and separate the bass and drums into a mono mix.

Before stereo became a thing, engineers were putting all the instruments into one speaker. Then stereo came and many engineers did not know anything about phantom imaging in the stereo field. They thought because now we have two speakers, let's put some instruments into one speaker, and some into the other. So they were not necessarily hard panning, but the tradition carried on.

Now some engineers still do that knowing it will be panned hard left/right in the stereo field, and it is an artistic choice.

In live sound reinforcement we like to pan everything to the middle because if you're close to one speaker, you won't hear the instruments that are on the other speaker.which would be the same if your song was payed in a narrow bar where the speakers are separated far away. In order to hear real phantom imaging, the listener has to be positioned in the middle of the speakers.

Don't forget about a lacquer cutting lathe.

Some mixes were done so the groove didn't blow out. Low frequencies needed balance between channels. Some engineers had some interesting choices on what to put where. The problem was probably dealt with more harshly when printing straight to disk.
