Why is it that older basses are much more desirable?

Hmmm ...

The pickups get weaker.
The finish is messed up.
The frets are worn.
The metal has rust.
Other parts may be broken.
The finish has faded or yellowed.
There are dings and gouges.
There is a lot of dead skin and dirt and sweat in every nook and cranny.

Hmmm ...

I think I'll take a newer cleaner bass.

And vintage is simply a nice way to say older.
