Why is Jazz Bass still the best?

Of course not - everyone knows that the biga is the perfect chariot.

But it has two wheels! When you combine them they cancel each other's motion... One wheel is the way to go.

From the time I started playing 25+ years ago, I have tried to like P basses. My first bass was a P, and the last bass I sold was a P5. They just never sounded right to me, too much of a one trick pony. My tastes have changed greatly over those 25 years, but I still do not dig P basses. No slam on anyone that does, they're classic, simple machines. But for my tastes, give me an active 5 string J bass and I can get almost any sound I need.

Good for what? For rock, or cutting through heavy guitar mixes? The most utilized ones for that are passive.

For jazz/fusion/funk..etc, active is nice - still not a must.

But saying "the best ones always have a preamp" like it is a fact is silly.

I love Jazz basses and Precision basses equally. Is that wrong?

My P/J in the works has a P body and a beefy J neck.

I'd love another good Jazz, but dang if I can find one at a price I want to pay that isn't too heavy for me. The 98 MIA I had wrecked my shoulder. Great bass, though. Had the sound. So now for me it's the Daisy Rock Butterfly that evokes all that crap:

Me personally: I would pick the Fender Jazz over any bass. I really love neck and the versatility of it. And when you put the Tone knob on full, MAN it stands out in a big band!

I like P-basses as well. I'd definitely use the P in a situation where I need it to literally shake the room with the deep bass and with that extra oomph. Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 got it right: P-bass config on a jazz body and neck. Smart Mark.

I'd pick a J/P franken-bass first
...then a G&L
...then a J (slight edge over the P because of the neck)
...then a P

But whatever works for you.
