Good for what? For rock, or cutting through heavy guitar mixes? The most utilized ones for that are passive.
For jazz/fusion/funk..etc, active is nice - still not a must.
But saying "the best ones always have a preamp" like it is a fact is silly.
If you go to a car forum, you won't see people arguing what kind of a chariot was superior in Roman times.
Probably not, but some people think a '57 chevy is better than a new corvette....
