Why is Pink Floyd more popular and appealing than Rush?

Ah, but then the question becomes "H" or Fish? I struggle with this daily.
It took me a while to listen to and enjoy the Steve Hogarth era of the band, but with patience I came to love Afraid Of Sunlight, Holidays In Eden and the last three albums, I can't resist the magic of Pete and Steve Rothery.
Apples and oranges and i love both.
One is a power trio with (had) three phenomenal musicians. Floyd is generally softer and more trippy with a lot more going on including backup singers, etc.

I'm sure that is the opinion of many here, and on TalkBass in general. It is also probably generational, almost nobody my age is as excited about Rush as those fellas that came along behind us.
In my opinion:
Jimi Hendrix...groundbreaking even 55 years later.
Cream....groundbreaking.
SRV....maybe the best blues guitarist ever, or at least level with the best there ever was.
Nirvana....a large part of helping kill a massive boring hair metal rut.
Primus....completely unique/original/different/new.
Hot Tuna ...nothing else sounds anything like them, completely unique/original.
Not sure I can assign any of those labels to Rush, but they were a very good power trio, with three gifted musicians who recorded a number of great hits and some very successful albums.
They were very successful at blending prog rock with hard rock that drew a lot of young guys towards prog.

I disagree, Rush, The Police and Primus. Cream, JHE and SRV were vehicles for a god like guitarrist, Nirvana is just Dave in a band
I think The Police were a good band and they had a couple of hit songs and an album or two that I liked but they sure didn't have the effect that the bands listed did. I think Rush was a good band also, but again they did not have an effect on music like the bands I listed. Nirvana was the poster child band for all of grunge and had/have a massive following. Popular music changed over-night when Nirvana and two or three of their contemporaries hit the airwaves. They ended the careers of lots of bands pretty quickly when grunge killed hair metal and many other cock rock bands. They were a huge band historically.
Those three guitar gods all had a massive effect on so many guitar players and all three are still revered by the best guitar players in the world today.

The Police changed the way drummers played, they also brought reggae in to the rock blood stream. The Police were more influential on popular music than Rush for sure. IMHO
I still don't. Virtuosity doesn't interest me. I want to be moved not impressed.
