Why is Pink Floyd more popular and appealing than Rush?

You are allowed your opinion you don't need to take it personal when people disagree. I've given the Syd era stuff tons of chances because their 70's and 80's stuff is amazing. Never moved me at all and I cannot agree with opinions like yours that he was so innovative. But who cares, disagreeing is great, that's why people are different. I respect your opinion as long as you don't feel the need to put people down. Really, in the end, its just music, no lives being saved. What do people do with the gifts God gives them... Are they kind, helping others? That means something to me. Peace.

Pink Floyd was experimenting trying figure out what they wanted to sound like at that time.
Syd got the most attention because he was the guitar player and was the most outgoing at the time.
I did not know millennials cared one way or the other about Pink Floyd, thats news to me.
I'm 63 years old and my kids are 38 and 41 so I'm not that familiar with what millennials think about a lot of things.

This is very representative of my thoughts on Floyd, one of the most amazing bands of all time.

See folks, there is no reason for any negatives. If you like The Beatles' Love Me Do more than Strawberry Fields, that's great. We are supposed to have different opinion as we all have different backgrounds, brains, personality, issues... It's fine to disagree.

Yes! Much about their more humble attitudes contributed to their success and remaining very close friends while having great success. Hard to think of another band that has done this. "Look, we are musicians, it's really not that noble of a pursuit" Geddy Lee. And they split all royalties evenly.

An acquired taste, yes. But couldn't imagine another voice except Geddy's for Rush. And he'd still be singing while playing those awesome basslines onstage, too. He's that good!

we all have our opinions so there are no wrong or rights here and i love both bands ...in fact i have seen rush way more than floyd and geddy has inspired my bass playing no end ...but it has to be said that comparing rush to floyd is totally laughable...and if you disagree then you need to listen to floyd more ...lots more.

Nope. The best renditions were DSOT and then Pulse giving Floyd a stunning live body of work.
And in no small part in drafting in very good musicians who took the recorded material to an even higher level.
That work is undergoing re releases 30 years later and like many great artists band, they were able to re-invent themselves.
Many bands or artists get one phase and then have to milk it. And that is no bad thing. The truly great do it 2, 3 or more times.

That applies to Rush. They had their early and up to 2112 stage. Then the amazing period of Hemispheres, through Exit.. Stage Left. Followed by Signals through A Show Of Hands. Then Vapor Trails, amazing... For me Floyd was incredible from Wish You Were Here throuigh Final Cut. Before WYWH I could take or leave. Live I think Rush has no peer. Rush live is usually better than studio, which is so rare. King's X comes to mind.

You are right brother, I was rude and disrespectful in my comments. You are certainly welcome to your own opinion. I tend to get defensive about certain musical views as I am an old timer and get a little grouchy at times. I yield sir.

My answer to the question is that Pink Floyd's songs are actually about human emotions and relationships and the human condition (alienation, etc.). David Gilmour's solos are very passionate and emotive. By contrast, Rush's songs are more abstract and sometimes about sociological and political theory. Ayn Rand, anyone?
Personally, I've never liked either. To me, Rush's music sounds like caffeinated hamsters on a wheel, and Floyd is lugubrious sludge.

Pleased for you. Doesn't do it for me - to me 'over-blown' and 'over-played' .
