Why is Pink Floyd more popular and appealing than Rush?

Rush is a power trio on the highly technical end of prog rock and their lyrics are more nerdy or intellectual.

PF is a more traditional band on the spacy and psychedelic end (and artsy if that is your idea of it) of prog rock and their lyrics help create the desired ambience.

So, two very different bands that will generally appeal to very different people. And, PF fans will almost always be in the majority.

No offense, but Syd songs are typical 60's fodder. Not too different from how the Moody Blues and tons of others sounded, but with a bizarre twist. Grateful for Syd because that was the situation that led Waters to become the phenomenal writer he became. Meddle and Dark Side are very interesting, and Wish You Were Here to The Final Cut are incredible.

I disagree. That is a daft comment not to mention Sid broke boundaries on the reel to reel. Unlike anyone and he literally was the first to do what he did outside of a garage.

Never cared for the Syd era of Pink Floyd, I think they developed leaps and bounds as soon as Syd was not leading them.
Gilmour and Waters together became a powerhouse team and Richard and Nick were very much able to round out a band effort for a number of years until Roger's ego got the best of him.

in my humble unasked for opinion, they should have been called by a different name after syd. He was the flavor of that band. It originated with him and it wasn't the same without him. His solo album was so far ahead of its time. Syd was a genius tbh.

Four guys have a group, one guy leaves, the other three stay and carry on.
Why would they want to not be called Pink Floyd when they were getting a following? ...Syd did not have a larger share in a four piece band, they were a band.

syd was the staple in the pink floyd original sound. to each their own. both eras are great in my opinion. just rubs me wrong when dumb millennials think they need to trash talk syd barrett in order to support new floyd where as they both were amazing. I just like their original approach to true psych rock. Granted maybe changing the name is a bit much i agree … but to just down on syd is a shame because it was him that made pink floyd even get notice in the first place. People these days cant seem to support one "click" without downing the other opinions. This is why I usually stay off forums. There are always jerks out there who have nothing positive to say about other. Peace .

In general Pink Floyd has a much wider appeal to rock fans than Rush. It seems their music is also more appealing to women.

Honestly, Money is infinitely better than Tom Sawyer, also, the personally no fan of Geddy's voice.

so is taking things people say out of context. I didn't call anyone dumb. I said it was dumb. It being how millennials tend to behave in the sight of any opposing viewpoints. Here's the full context, including the part where you wrote the exact phrase "dumb millennials." How is that anything but calling an entire generation dumb? Even if I interpret that as generously as possible—that you're somehow only talking about the "dumb" ones—you're still casually trashing people. And then you immediately decry negativity in forums? Take a look in the mirror.

For the record, I'm too young for Gen X and too old for Millennial, but I don't see why that matters.

Well, their record label *is* called Anthem. And I don't know about specifically referencing Rand, but her so-called 'objectivist' philosophy runs through the lyrics of all their best work from their 'golden age' of the 70s and 80s.

The whole 2112 album is based around a theme that is heavily drawn from objectivism. Hell, the song "Freewill" is spot on for it.

Pink Floyd addresses themes of vulnerability in their lyrics very often, which is a universal feeling and a topic that is not embraced by adherents to objectivism as portrayed by Rand. The song "Dogs" seems like a great descriptor for the dark side of objectivism when positioned in an interconnected environment. That vulnerability, paired with music that one can immerse themselves in, makes their music easier to draw in and connect with a large audience, even on a scale of fandom as massive as those for both bands.

I count myself as a Pink Floyd fan, for that matter.

I have not read anyone here downing on Syd Barrett. What I did read was you feeling like you had to put Syd above the rest of the band.
Pink Floyd was experimenting trying figure out what they wanted to sound like at that time.
Syd got the most attention because he was the guitar player and was the most outgoing at the time.
I did not know millennials cared one way or the other about Pink Floyd, thats news to me.
I'm 63 years old and my kids are 38 and 41 so I'm not that familiar with what millennials think about a lot of things.

When I was driving trucks, i came over a slight hill and right there in the road was a family of rabbits. They didn't have a chance. I took out the whole lot of 'em. That sucked. I know rabbits in my nightmares.
Then, one time I hit a deer that had already been hit but wasn't dead. It's head was at the height of the trucks big chrome bumper and bam, it went under. When I got back to the yard, I guess the dust on the fur left an out line of the head and ears on the metal. It looked like a playboy bunny. Then I got the hose and started cleaning the underside of the truck and axles and suspension of chunks of meat and blood and such.
