I sold my 60s 4001 for more than it was worth because a collector offered me a generous price.

A lot of the vintage gear is over-priced and over-rated.

In defense of the seller...it IS a Bass IV...those are pretty rare.

The reissues made in Japan cost over $2k, for comparison. A buddy of mine who owns a shop had a Fiesta Red 63 w/ matching headstock and said it was about to sell for $14k.

Yeah, I don't know jack about audacity. I do know that a guy on another forum I know did this with audacity,
which is how I ran across the YT versions.

That's not a bass . . . it's a "Fender VI", a baritone guitar that's often used to double the bass . . . see "tic-tac bass" . . .

It sounds like it's a guy's widow selling the bass...she probably had it appraised somewhere and was given that ridiculous number. Also, I don't know much about vintage Fender basses (not my thing), but it appears that Leo Fender retrofit a regular Fender electric to make it a 6-string bass. The headstock and tuning keys look suspiciously non-bass-guitar. Also, I have no idea what the string-spacing is, but the neck appears extremely narrow. I get the feeling that the oddball-antique nature of this thing is the whole selling strategy.
A typical bass player will just buy a new 6-string bass, to take advantage of the wonderful technology that has come along in the last 50 years. This guitar is most definitely NOT for everyone!

I doubt it. The starting price of this auction is $10grand, so selling for less isn't an option. This seems like the seller is trying to boost the perceived value of the model by setting an unrealistic asking price. A nice trick Guitar Center used to do.

This bass was Fender's answer to the Danelectro 6 string bass. It was a commercial failure because it cost significantly more than the Danelectro 6-string, but didn't really sound all that much better.

GC has always been significantly ahead of the pricing curve. I can't imagine them finding a buyer at that price. But they'll sit on something like this for years if they have to.

Well it is rare and it is a "Beatle" guitar, so I have no doubt this thing will sell for more than it's worth. I'm pretty sure I could get a lot more for my 74' 4001 than it's actually worth too, not that I would sell it.
