It sounds like it's a guy's widow selling the bass...she probably had it appraised somewhere and was given that ridiculous number.

Her asking price is not ridiculous at all. Some 60's Fender VI guitars are selling for more than the one at the center of this discussion. It depends on color and year. A collector will definitely but it. And some of the biggest buyers of vintage Fenders are the Japanese

Also, I don't know much about vintage Fender basses (not my thing), but it appears that Leo Fender retrofit a regular Fender electric to make it a 6-string bass.

The headstock and tuning keys look suspiciously non-bass-guitar. Also, I have no idea what the string-spacing is, but the neck appears extremely narrow.

I get the feeling that the oddball-antique nature of this thing is the whole selling strategy.

The main selling point is that is is indeed a rare model from Fender.

A typical bass player will just buy a new 6-string bass, to take advantage of the wonderful technology that has come along in the last 50 years. This guitar is most definitely NOT for everyone!

Yeah, I don't know jack about audacity. I do know that a guy on another forum I know did this with audacity,

I would love to hear the tracks made with Audacity. To me, these two youtube posts were made from a single track from the original 4-track recording -- especially since in the vocal the sound continues after the original recording.

Well it's old, kinda rare, looks to be in great condition and it's a Fender. 10K does seem a little high though. Custom shop ones go for $3,300. And yes I would love to have one.

I played one of those Fender VIs back in the early 70s ... it was not a very good bass. More of a quirky strange bass. The reason why some instruments are rare is because they didn't sell well. The p-bass and jazz bass were much better basses then and now.

Get a Musicman Silhouette it will be a lot cheaper and a better player ... If you want a short scale 6 string bass.

because it's a preCBS clay dot 1963 Bass VI (listed incorrectly as a 1965) in very nice condition and it is a custom color (CAR). IMO, the price is not out of line at all.

After reading it, I think someone created some files off the Beatles Rockband game, which require Audacity or Reaper to manipulate the tracks.

Jauqo is correct. It's a Baritone Guitar strung one octave below a standard guitar. Typically, baritones are strung B to B or A to A, a 4th or 5th below a standard guitar. You can get into what a "Bass guitar" is then, but this is definitely a guitar strung low. Most 65 and older basses and guitars in this condition go for far, far more.

I've not seen one sell for that much ever. The one Jack Bruce played that was painted by The Fool sold for a lot of $$, but 10K might be a record for just a used 6 string.

Just started reading this, and came across some of the posts thankfully clearing this up...

This is technically a bass guitar, but not one targeted for use by or sale to bass players. It was built by Fender as a response to the (at the time) current trend of using a Danelectro bass with a pick alongside a Fender bass to give a track's bass sound more of a percussive quality, like a slapped upright...

Any pre-1965 Fender instrument is going to demand a high price, especially one in good shape. Not saying $10k is reasonable for this, but... think of it as an antique, rather than an instrument you would actually buy to play, and then you won't be offended maybe! It's value is more determined by the antique market rather than the used musical instrument market.

In this economic time, I'd expect a lot more than a loser like that bass for my $10K. And the neck plate indicates it IS a '65 CBS instrument.
