1. GreatEST indicates no others are as great. Again, for artists, it is subjective. Is Renior greater than Picasso? But I didn't say "worlds' greatest <insert instrument here>," and that's where people are getting confused.
I said, "Jimi Hendrix is the greatest rock guitarist of all time." I used the word "rock" in there, so Jazz, Country and other forms are not included. I used the word "greatest," and not "best," for a reason.
In the way I used the word "greatest," it cannot be disputed.

2. large in number; numerous: Great hordes of tourists descend on Europe each summer.
3. unusual or considerable in degree, power, intensity, etc.: great pain.
4. wonderful; first-rate; very good: We had a great time. That's great!

greatest (ˈɡreɪtɪst)
— adj
1. the superlative of Link Removed
— n
2. slang the greatest an exceptional person
I mean the rock guitarist who did the most to further the instrument's use. I mean the rock guitarist who had the greatest effect on the form. I mean the rock guitarist most frequently cited by other great guitarists as having the most influence. I mean the rock guitarist who played in a manner combining technical skill, (he did have it,) raw emotion, (one of the best ever,) technical innovation, and fitting the composition.
There has never been, nor will there ever be, a player who comes close.
2. Hendrix did have an effect of the form, raw emotion, and he did play in context (fitting the composition.) If you mean by technical innovation, his use of feedback and effects, I have to agree. He gave us effects beyond reverb, echo, and vibrato. I don't mean to detract from anything he did. We was a great innovator, but not the only one of great import. I can think of Aldoph Rickenbacker, Les Paul and Leo Fender for starters. I know it isn't popular with the younger crowd, but The Beatles saved pop music going in a whole different direction. It was predicted that Dixieland Jazz would make a comback as the new pop music.
So he is an innovator among innovators. Certainly a great one by any measure. So if you want to define greatest as a slang term meaning really extra great, okay.
and All Along the Watchtower is one of my all time favorite tunes.
