I also have to wonder, out of all those millions of gigs that Vail is happy to tell us about all over the planet (you know, with every amp that's ever been made)...how many of them is he unloading the truck personally. The weight of your gear becomes a lot less important when you're not doing the moving yourself all the time.

Bah...Vail's probably the most professional bassist in the most professional show I might have ever seen. He just has strong opinions and says them. I got no problem with that as long as he stays off my beloved Ampeg!

And just because you're famous and play with big-time folks doesn't mean you don't have to sling amps sometimes. I play with bigtime folks and a lot of times I don't have to touch an amp, but I still have to move them when I play locally. Not all of us can hire cartage to go play a local gig ;)

I agree with the premise that we shouldn't just buy lightweight "just because it's lighter." Unless of course, there is a severe injury necessitating it.

But lightweight amps don't necessarily sound bad.

People just need to realize that weight is only one factor. As long as they do that, it's all good. If a 10lb amp sounded better than a 2lb amp, all else being the same, which would you get? I would take the 10lb amp. Now say that amp was 50lbs and sounded *slightly* better than the 10lb amp. I would still probably take the 10lb amp.

Objectively, I've played most every amp made/ available in the US. Every Year. All the new stuff. For the last 20 plus years..I've played thousands of gigs for countless millions of people, etc., etc., etc.

Your judgement is an opinion.

There are people out there who play only tube amps and see your GK Fusion as a light weight cop out. But that would be just their opinion.

I just want my rig on stage as quickly and easily as possible so I can get down to playing tunes. It's not super light weight, not heavy either (Mesa WA or RH450 int 2xDB112s), but sounds great to me. The WA is a 'light weight' amp but I prefer it tonally to the GK Fusion.

My back is technically thrashed to Hell. Im fat and been smoking for years

BUT..... I can still throw around a 170 pound 8x10 cabinet like nothing.

and when i pick up a 70 pound bag of concrete it feels like a bundle of goose feathers.

I was thinking of getting a real girlfriend.....but those weigh 100 pounds....maybe i will just get a ultra light Blow up Doll to save on the weight.

I guess the rest of us can only aspire to the pinnacle of manhood you have acheived. Maybe I oughtta get a part-time job as a stunt man to catch up to you:p;)

Seriously-carrying weight that makes a difference is worthwhile. Many have found light stuff that satisfies them. I'm just an amateur hack, but I have good ears, and I've heard heavy **** that sounds like ****, light gear that pumps heavy tone and vice-versa. No correlation either way IMO. And frankly, the association of heavy gear with manly toughness and light gear with laziness is just plain silly.

The reason I like my lightweight stuff isn't just that it's lightweight. It's that it's lightweight and still gives me the sort of sounds I want. That's what makes it an option. Being light and sounding crappy wouldn't provide any alternative at all.
